An alert Slidell police officer got more than a little concerned when he spotted an 18-wheel gasoline tanker drag racing with a Honda Accord through the streets of Slidell Tuesday night.
The officer managed to stop the vehicles after the race reached speeds of 80 mph along Old Spanish Trail. The tanker truck turned out to be empty, and both drivers were cited for drag racing, authorities said Wednesday.
Craig Smith, the driver, told police he was racing against his cousin, Brandon Tanks, when he sped past a police officer while turning from Pontchartrain Drive onto Third Street, Slidell Police spokesman Capt. Kevin Foltz said.
The race apparently began shortly before 8:40 p.m., when 19-year-old Tanks and 33-year-old Smith were bragging about the speed of their vehicles, Foltz said. Smith boasted that his truck could outpace Smith's Honda Accord and challenged him to a race, he said.
Detective Daniel Seuzeneau was stopped on Third Street when the tanker blew past him on it's way to Old Spanish Trail, followed by the Honda, Foltz said. He caught up with them as they headed toward Interstate 10 and pulled them over near the Waffle House, he said.
Smith, of Kenner, initially told Seuzeneau that he was just driving fast, but confessed to racing in the 18-wheeler after Tanks, of Slidell, told the detective they had been in a race, Foltz said.
Smith told investigators that he had been driving trucks for seven years and "had never done anything like this before," Foltz said.

Of course - a Cummins/Detroit Diesel/CAT diesel is NOTHING to play around with at speed. A big rig/bus has sluggish takeoff, buses do better thanks to automatic trannies but they haul *** on the highway. The old 2-stroke Detroit Diesels were THE motor for hill climbing and highway use in trucks and buses.

And yall boys always wonder why us truckers have such a road rage attitude,,,we tired of having to prove ourselves against Hondas'. LOL!!! Little did many of you realize, that trucks are actually pretty fast(especially when empty and not governed). Most STANDARD motors on trucks are pushing out 550 horses without the turbo involved. Don't get me wrong,, I don't approve of what the trucker did, as he was essentially hurling a 15 ton(estimated empty weight) "missle" thru the streets and it could have been VERY DANGEROUS. Sure the Honda SHOULD HAVE essentially blown him off from the very start, but when you get a truck hitting the high side of the gears and getting into full momentum, and is not governed,, watch out,,game over Honda.
Bottom line,,,, they both get the DA award!!! Trucker(should have known better),,Honda owner (got just plain stupidity).
**edit,,, here is a rare glimpse of what most of us are pushing down the highway. This was from one of my old company trucks a few years back,,
Detroit 60 Series motor,,,about 550 horses
closer view of the size of the turbo,,

I wonder how 550HP feels at speed. I do know the 430HP tour bus/RV variant is quite smooth and fast when there's no one else but the driver on a 45 foot MCI commuter coach. I wish I could say the same for the S50 and the Cummins ISM/M11...

It would be really cool to mod those trucks with low profile tires and bigger wheels and race suspension for awesome handling. Put a wing on the back just like shown in trukn1's avatar. it'll be flat out awesome.
