Thumbs up Audi R4 new details emerge.

from http://www.r4um.com/

New info coming out about the upcoming Audi R4.

Will be introduced in 2013, positioned under TT, in coupe and roadster variants.
Supposed to spawn porsche and VW versions also.

Best part is its estimated weight of 2500 pounds (I'm hopeful, but doubtful personally ). - Source

If they can really get that thing down to 2500 pounds with the turbo 2.0 that thing is going to be very very popular with tuners and the young

Audi tends to do that (but not always).........introduce Euro-Market models first, then, if successful, try them out in the U.S. market.

What is especially interesting about this car is the prospect of a 4-motor (one at each wheel) electrical version.

I don't understand how this could conceivably come close to 2500lbs, but wouldn't mind being proven wrong.

I don't see this thing slotting below the TT in price. The TT only cost $37K, so a mid-engined R4 would have to be priced like an MR-2 to slot below that. It's more likely IMO, that it'll slot between the TT and the R8.

Aside from that it'll have a gas model and an all electric model. The gas model may have a curb-weight of 2500lbs but the electric model will likely be far heavier.

ASF. Audi Space Frame. This tech. dropped the weight of the A5 from 3500 lbs. to 2888 lbs., making it a very quick vehicle with the 2.0L turbo.

^^ Note: The US version of Audi A5 2.0T Quattro coupe weighs over 3500 pounds, it's not very quick.

Car and Driver reported weight at 3649-pound for the 2.0T, about 130 fewer pounds than the 3.2

I assume the ASF being referred to is this (weight reduction quoted is 200 pounds, not 612 pounds):

"Audi has unveiled an aluminum A5 Coupe prototype that is over 200 pounds lighter than its equivalent steel bodied production model." (they gave example of some stripped Euro version going from 3130 pounds to 2888 pounds)

Good stuff from Audi in the works regardless.

The TT weighs a lot b/c it shares it platform with the Golf.....

This is interesting, though it might directly fight the sub Boxster car based off this platform to well. Not sure if Porsche should go "too low" for sales but if anyone can prove badge is all that matters it is them!

ASF saved only about 100kg on the TT, and that's Audi's figure announced in press releases. I just don't see how ASF is going to shave off so much on the R4.

As cars, they are HOT, and I can't wait to see them. In terms of product lineup, the VW Bluesport/Audi R4/Baby Boxster are a train wreck waiting to happen. They overlap in price way too much, not only with themselves, but in Porsche and Audi's cases, with other cars in their brands. The one that needs to go is the baby Boxster. It's going to start only about $3K under the Boxster, so what's the point?
