I never completely get how this type of thing happens. Yea, there are always 'reasons', but they never make complete sense.

While brakes, of course, can fail from a number of reasons, I would doubt it is from pad-wear.....unless the car has a LOT of miles on it and she just wasn't listening to the screechers on the pad-wear warning tabs (which, of course, is possible if she often drives around tanked up on booze)

But Miatas generally don't need brake pads very often. It is a very reliable car, and its light weight and strong engine-braking effect from the short manual-transmission gear ratios (and, to an extent, the automatic ratios as well) places little stress and wear on the brakes.

If it was a Toyota, I'm sure she would have claimed that it accelerated all by itself. She probably had brake problems. She probably never put her foot on the pedal!!
