Psshh you can't even get paint-by-number books anymore for less than $280.

I dont know anyone who would actually do this unless the car was 15+ years old and a real beater. I am pretty sure they dont do a lot of Rolls Royce Phantoms at MAACCO

I would like to get my hood re-painted but I'll pass on them.

They're probably trying to compete with Earl Sheib...a well-known company with a reputation for cheap paint jobs.

Not to mention the "extras" they will charge for to get the car ready to paint.

I was thinking about Earl Sheib as I was reading the thread and LOL when I say you mentioned him

In the early 70s I remember my grandfather telling people he got his car painted for like $49 and it looked it

Not that serious fellas. Maaco is a paint shop just like any other shop. Their job is to lure you into the door with the lowest service possible and upsell you (which they do a good job of).

You turn down the add-ons and just pay the 'special' rate how is it their fault?

I've never used them but don't see any reason why I wouldn't if needed.

The reason why I wouldn't is exactly what you said:

"Their job is to lure you into the door with the lowest service possible and upsell you (which they do a good job of). "

For starters, that's a good enough reason to avoid that particular business.

I see what you're saying but I still don't see an issue. Newer the car, the higher the package you need. There's shouldn't be any upsell necessary. It's not like they are hiding anything.

- Is Maaco 'signature' paint job any less quality than another shop?
- Is the cost about the same?

We compare cars with fact based analysis on here, why not the same for paint shops? There are great reviews online for the signature paint job.

lol, we can argue about Hyundai and 'luxury' but Maaco, for as long as they've been around, can't be a decent shop?

Believe it or not, hearing from some (Not all) painters, Maaco paint jobs aren't really that bad. Maaco does a lot of volume painting. Like any job, if you to a lot of it you get pretty good at it. What I mean is the painters at Maaco are actually pretty good at painting cars. However, what I am talking about here is just paint. I wouldn't trust them with body wort at all. Say you had a new hood or fender that needed paint. Maaco might actually be a decent choice. If you needed a fender or hood repaired and painted though I'd look elsewhere.

Anyway, I still wouldn't take my car to Maaco for a paint job, but I might consider them to paint some of my aftermarket parts before installation like lip spoilers, grills and such.
