On 22nd year, Toyota Phils. unveils new van, mounts huge sales event
“BIG” may well be the theme as Toyota Motor Phils. (TMP) marks its 22nd anniversary today, with the country’s biggest carmaker mounting its biggest sales event of the year inside a big tent while having unveiled a big multipurpose vehicle (MPV) on Monday.
Called the Toyota Tent Event, the automotive spectacle—which starts today and ends on August 8, and is ongoing at the Le Pavilion Metropolitan Park in Pasay City—features exclusive sales offers and packages that promise huge discounts, attractive trade-in deals and various family activities, according to TMP.
“We are hosting the first Toyota Tent Event in the country to express our gratitude to our customers,” said TMP President Michinobu Sugata, as he cited the company’s present 32.3-percent market share, or 26, 493 units sold, and TMP’s leadership in the country’s Passenger Car and Commercial Vehicle (CV) segments, as well as in overall sales. The figures cement TMP’s hold on the Triple Crown sales title, Sugata said.
Big, big sale
At the tent event, TMP said it is offering its Pay Low, Pay Light, Pay Cash and Pay Later promo schemes that fit various customers’ budgets and lifestyles. Also, customers get the chance to draw as much as P100,000 worth of discounts from the promos and to win a brand-new Toyota Prius, the country’s first commercially available hybrid vehicle.
Customers who place reservations from today until August 8 are entitled to more discounts, TMP said. Those interested in trading their old vehicles can also get up to P20,000 worth of certificates during the event.
To ensure easier transactions, the Toyota Financial Services is providing on-site approval of financing schemes, while TMP is offering its various models, including the new Vios and its 1.3-liter variant that’s fitted with an automatic transmission, for ride-and-drive activities.
“This Tent Event aims to provide customers with an enjoyable vehicle purchase experience by joining together a handful of standard amenities customers would look for when buying a car,” said TMP Executive Vice President Yuji Goto. “This is also a part of our efforts to raise the level of customer service even outside the perimeter of our showrooms.”
Star power
Providing the sales event more star power is the introduction of the Toyota Alphard premium MPV whose name, according to TMP First Vice President for Vehicle Sales Operations Raymond Rodriguez, takes after the first letter in the Greek alphabet and also aptly refers to the brightest star in the constellation Hydra. A ubiquitous presence on Japan roads, the Alphard has for years been a prospect of TMP, but its right-hand drive only configuration prevented the vehicle’s arrival here. However, Toyota started building variants for the huge left-hand drive China market, and so the doors finally opened for the Alphard to come to local shores.
Rodriguez said the Alphard is now TMP’s flagship minivan and is seen to strengthen the company’s lineup in the CV segment.
The Alphard unveiled locally is powered by a 2.4-liter, four-cylinder gasoline engine that has 16 valves governed by Toyota’s VVT-i system. Rated by TMP to produce 167 horsepower at 6,000rpm and 227 Newton-meters of torque at 4,000rpm, the engine is mated to a four-speed automatic transmission. The Alphard rides on MacPherson struts with a stabilizer and torsion beam suspension and is fitted with 16-inch alloy wheels.
As a premium MPV, the Alphard expectedly features upscale equipment like HID headlamps that have intelligent Adaptive Front Lighting System, rain-sensing wipers, automatic power-folding mirrors that are linked to the vehicle’s reverse gear (adjusting for angles when the car is backing up), and power-operated side doors, which ensure more convenient exit and entry into the Alphard.
Speaking of entering the vehicle, the Alphard’s interior is loaded with more posh stuff.
The luxury-car staple wood grain and metallic accents set off the mood, as are LED lighting and the two moon roofs, which emphasize the cabin’s airy feel. The front passenger’s and second-row seats have power-operated ottomans while the third-row seats can be reconfigured for storage space flexibility. Furthering the Alphard’s cozy-but-high-tech character are the multi-information display that even monitors eco-friendly driving, and a sophisticated audio system that has NXT ceiling actuators, which spread sound evenly across the cabin—truly high-end kit.
For all its luxurious appointments, TMP prices the Alphard at a reasonable P2.790 million.

Wow, I can't believe this is happening. Years ago, during the previous gen model. Only RHD models existed. If you wanted one, you'd have to do your own modifications and RHD->LHD conversions which are not official and could pose a risk (if not done right). Now fast forward to August 2010 and we now finally have our own official LHD version. Hip Hip Hurray!!!!
Technically though, credit goes to them rich Mainland Chinese businessmen and bigwigs for creating demand to convince Toyota Japan to create an LHD platform. Now this has been made a reality. As such, aside from Mainland China and us, other potential markets include:
-Taiwan (they adored their Previa and lots of rich people there as well)
-Middle East (especially them businessmen, oil-tycoons and shieks from the GCC territories who have limitless wealth who want to travel in style and comfort).
Again thank you indeed to the rich people, millionaires, billionaires, oil-tycoons, moguls and the elite (in LHD countries in Asia and the Middle East) for making this possible.
At least this once, you have done something that is noble and self-sacrificing.
Anyways, more pics (and possible a mini-review) to come starting this weekend.
P.S.

Are you still in the Philippines? If so, then if you're available, do pass by the Toyota Tent Event 2010 at Le Pavillion in Pasay City (it's beside the Toyota Manila Bay dealership and near SM Mall of Asia). I hope to see you there...

The first batches are indeed mostly 2.4 liter versions and unfortunately has the 4-speed ECT gearbox (shame that we didn't get the CVT though )
HOWEVER, one representative hinted that a 3.5 V6 Dual VVTi version (with 2GR engine) with 6-speed Super-ECT will arrive in our shores in 4th quarter 2010.
