and those T-Birds had some oil issues and there's really no interest in the car today oil issues or not.The car peaked quickly and died.It was slow and needed more HP.

I don't think the Volt will quickly die, though, even if it gets some competition from the extended-range Prius yet to be released. In fact, Toyota's recent bad press may (?) tip some potential buyers towards the Volt. But I'm pretty sure that, success or not, you won't be seeing 20K markups on either the Volt or the extended-range Prius after both cars are on the market in competition with each other. And, of course, price-collusion (Price-fixing) between Chevy and Toyota dealerships is clearly illegal....few shops would be willing to risk that in today's regulatory climate.

One dealer does not make a trend. If this guy wants to try and get $20k over list, the laws of supply and demand will determine if he's crazy or not. My guess is that he won't, and the price will come down initially to something over sticker but who knows just how much. In a few months things will be normal.

We'll have to see if there's any issues with the Volt down the road.
No pun intended.

Exactly. The key word is "try" to get $20K over list. Yes a handful will pay full $20K markup, but most will pay far less than that even if the price paid is something over MSRP.

The fact the dealership puts this in front of educated buyers turns off the buyer right away, such a great first impression.

Yes, I know a sucker is born everyday.

Manufacturers could also help out by making sure that, when a new model is introduced, initial supply is also adequate to meet projected demand and prevent big markups....and that limits are not placed on factory production. What we saw last year with the new Camaro, for example, was a disaster. GM only committed itself to 5000 in the first year, which was totally riduculous, IMO. Demand, in early 1999, tremendously outpaced supply.... needlessly so. Unlike the Mustang, which was never dropped, there was a huge pent-up demand for new Camaros from GM having dropped the last F-bodies in 2002. The entire production run/allocation, of 5000 first-year 2010 Camaros ran out in less than two months.....and dealers started taking orders for 2011s.

Anyone who pays $61,000 for a Volt is out of their mind and is forgetting the very reason why they are buying it in the first place.

At today's gas price of about $2.60/gal, you can buy nearly 7,700 gallons of gas with $20K. That's 192,500 miles in a large car that averages only 25mpg!!!

Or how about this? You could buy a $25K mid-level Prius (that carries more and is more practical) and drive 692,300 miles at a cost of $61K!!!

BTW, without the markup and simply comparing the $41K price of the Volt with the typical $25K Prius, you can buy $16K worth of gas and at $2.60/gal, you can drive 307,700 miles before reaching the purchase price of the Volt.

I would never pay over MSRP for any car in the world. If gas prices are they way they are now I don't think they will get 20 grand over MSRP now when gas was close to $4/gallon
the chevy volt was the cat's meow people could not wait until it came out, but now not so much. You get a few of those movie stars buying a bunch of them with a vast majority of them supporting the green movement.

Its called a free market system (well technically ) If someone is going to pay 20k for it over MSRP, more power to the dealer.

I say this over and over and I know its hard to believe but some people really really are enthusiastic over efficient or new technology vehicles just like those that think more HP means everything.

We saw people pay high markup for M3s, GTRs, etc etc. Some people will pay to have it first.

While I am not a fan of GM for their bailout they are producing much better vehicles and I can understand who would pay high MSRP for one. The Camaro and Corvette ZR1 etc for instance were also vehicles that had markups (and the XLR initially)

Funny to me that some want to beat up GM then get all mad at others when comments are made about brands they like.
