Default Ferrari recalls every 458 Italia due to fire risk

http://www.evo.co.uk/news/evonews/25..._supercar.html

Seems Ferrari has finally admitted there is a fault with its new 458 Italia supercar after several customer cars caught fire for (seemingly) no particular reason.

...

Their conclusion was that the cause of these fires could be traced to the adhesive Ferrari had used to hold the rear, inner wheel arch liners in position. The job of these liners is to keep all the road dirt picked up by the wheels from entering the engine compartment but, in extreme cases, the heat from the engine can cause these liners to deform and move closer to the engine, causing the adhesive to catch fire. This soon caused other components to start combusting and this is how several Ferrari 458s have been destroyed by fire.

That is scary. I wonder what will be done for owners who lost their cars.

You pay and pay for a car like this . Its supposed to be the ultimate in performance. You'd figure that Ferrari would do more long term tests . Plus these fires in these supercars ( mainly Italian) is not uncommon for some reason

Seems like a relatively easy fix.

At least it wasn't anything mechanical or electrical. It's just flammable material...

With all of the engineering that goes into a car like the 458 Italia I would have assumed that they would have thought of this stuff.

That is funny, the other day I was watching the news doing a report on the 458's that caught on fire and that Ferrari has released a statement saying that it is not part of a big issue, it is a separate issue and will be dealt with accordingly.

They only admitted to 5 fires? I thought there were more. For the engine to get that hot, I would worry about the aluminum body and all other non-metal part near by too.
This one has to be the top horror story that I have heard so far.

Wait, how does the Ferrari test cars not catch on fires after being rung around the ring and their test tracks, yet some millionaires cruising around on a Sunday manage to heat it up enough to set it on fire lol

I imagine test tracks to be relatively smooth, even at high speeds and turns.

Real roads have potholes, speed bumps, roadkill, and the occasional ladder in the middle of the freeway. All of which can rattle a few things here and there...

interesting, i also wonder what happens to those cars that are burned down already. and at the same time, i surely hope this is the cause and nothing more (that are still hidden so far)

The handful of owners who first reported the fires - and that were later confirmed to be due to this problem - will now receive a new model, Ferrari said.
Some hopeful news.
