....I say, fill out those fenders with some of Porsche's newer OEM wheels, freshen up the interior and add a small bit of today's technology and let the 959 roll!

Fantastic sport car for it's day, still looks OK to me, BUT 964 are some of the most expensive Porsche to maintain. AWD models particularly.

I like Porsche performance but hate the fact that they have the most boring cars ever. The swear that the car is totally different every generation but yet its really the same design they have been using for 50 years. The engineers are talented but the designers should be shot in a public square.

Sounds like you've driven them. I also have.

The differences between the later air-cooled Porsches and the current water-cooled versions are big.

I actually haven't, but just seeing them on public roads is impressive. Their interiors are no-nonsense and they seem like much less of a status symbol than the relatively comfortable 996 and 997.

I did get a Cayman recently, however (see my sig). Maybe I'll get to drive a 993 someday.

Porsche 911 (964)

So who else is a fan of these? Or not?
You had to either know how to drive early 911s, or be quite careful with them. Before the days of ABS, traction/stability control, upgraded suspensions/tires, computer-designed chassis, etc... rear-engined Porsches could really bite with their notorious, drop-throttle snap-oversteer and spinouts. Many a hapless owner found himself (or herself) in a ditch. And, in the mountains, a strong guard-rail could (and often did) save lives.

Did you drive earlier 911s? I hope you weren't one of the snap-oversteer victims. Your higher-than-average level of auto knowledge, though, hopefully, would have prevented that.

I've driven many and owned one air-cooled 964. I never drove mine in the rain, for the reasons you mentioned.

I've owned 2 Boxsters (very much like the Cayman as you already know and quite civilized since they both share much with the 996/997) and one 964, the cars are like night and day.

The 964 is loud, heavy steering, heavy brakes, heavy clutch, loping idle, weak AC, leaks some oil, interior's plain and cold and firm to the touch. These cars don't make pleasant daily drivers. But talk about a full sensory experience for a weekend car, brutal.
