Chevrolet signs Tim Allen as brand's new voice

General Motors has officially announced that television and movie star Tim Allen will be the new "voice of Chevrolet," starting with a series of ads that will begin airing on September 7. These ads will be for the all-new 2011 Chevrolet Cruze, and while Allen is a big-name with a very recognizable voice, GM's vice president of marketing, Joel Ewanick, reminds us that "the car will be the star."

Allen is best known for his starring role on the long-running 1990s sitcom Home Improvement, as well as his roles in The Santa Clause movies and as the voice behind Buzz Lightyear in the Toy Story trilogy. In addition, Allen is also a well-known automobile enthusiast and has an extensive car collection. He is a native of Detroit, Michigan, and has a strong love for classic American muscle cars.

Look Listen for Tim Allen in four 30-second GM spots, scheduled to hit your television screen in the coming weeks. GM says that the Cruze's marketing campaign will ramp up as the cars begin to arrive at dealerships in greater volume.

Tim "the tool man" Taylor! Good for GM....a reputable voice, known by many of generations young and old.

A great choice.

Who didn't grow up watching Tim Taylor wrench on a classic hot rod while avoiding his wife?

Thanks......but I'll judge the Cruze by its merits, not a slick marketing voice. Same with my brother.........he bought a Soul for its merits, not hamster cartoons.

Money talks.

Same reason that Tiger Woods signed up with Buick, the late Ricardo Montalban did Chrysler Corinthian Leather ads, Paul Hogan and Lance Armstrong signed up with Subaru, and NASCAR driver Tony Stewart signed up with Burger King. They do the ads until the companies stop paying them.

Isn't he obligate as the voice for the Disney character? Seriously? Kids will be totally confused.

"Daddy, why is Buzz Lightyear selling cars?

"Because Buzz needs a new flux capacitor in his space fighter"

A bad idea. Tim is known as a comedian and silly. Those are two traits you do not want to connect to cars you sell. But since it's GM, it actually kinda makes sense. One step forward, two steps back.

I think you mean "Hamstar," Mike. I love those commercials. Ugly little truck, but cool commercials. Great song, too.

Interesting choice. I suppose since Ford has Denis Leary, and Ram has Sam Elliot, they needed a voice people could recognize as distinct from Howie Long's.

He's been doing ads for Michigan for the last year or two. Not that Michigan is doing all that well, but he's kept an appropriate level of decorum and gravitas in those ads. No reason he can't do so for GM.

Not that I like GM at all, but it was a good move on their part.
