Question Should Lexus jump into the cliche 4 door coupe not really a coupe segment?

CLS is in its 2nd gen
Audi A7 sportback is coming
BMW will have one

They are based on existing architecture and a way to make some more profit off existing parts. In return people that buy them get a sportier looking vehicle than the traditional sedan and it is rarer around town.

What do you think? Should Lexus do it?

I'm not a fan of 4 door coupes. That said, if they do go this route, they should change the GS instead of making a whole new sedan. That way it'll help differentiate it from the ES a bit more.

They should strongly consider it, but they need more actual coupes first!!!

It needs to be seriously considered. All the premium car makers are aware of the success (not just in terms of sales stats, but also the styling influence) of the CLS.

But we currently have variations on the theme (before/after it became more exaggerated in the form of the CLS) with sleek fastback 4 door sedans such as the IS, XF, Sonata, Rapide. I happen to like the trend, because these cars are far more useful than 2 door coupes but still look sleek.

In short....yes and no.

Lexus already has so many sedans - IS, HS, ES, GS, LS vs. Audi (A4,6,8), BMW (3,5,7) and Mercedes (C,E,S,CLS)- that I think adding a 6th could be a very bad move. I think the HS was a complete failure in judgement and I would like to see it eliminated from the lineup, but even without the HS, the ES creates a bit of a unique situation for Lexus. It's the size of a midsize car but priced like an entry level one, and I believe that this has already been a stumbling block for the GS (which I have also discussed at length, and won't bore you with).

Considering that, I think the best thing Lexus could do is try to move the 4GS towards a 4-door-coupe-ish demeanor as a way to differentiate it further from the ES. More dramatic styling and sexier lines would be a great start, and that's basically all these "4 Door Coupes" are anyway.

Axe the HS

IS - Entry Level Sporty

ES - Entry/Midsize Luxury

GS - Midsize sporty/4 door coupe-ish

LS - flagship

So...I guess I should have just said no and not bothered with all this typing

the idea with 4 door coupe is more of a "cool" car so it shouldn't be put together with the rest of the sedans. it wouldn't make any sense. people get the cls not for the space (or they are silly).

i have to say again, it would be horrible if they make the gs into anything close to 4 door coupe. the car is supposed to be spacious and comfortable. the current 3gs is already terrible on that, losing so much space compared to 5 and e. if they make the 4gs like the cls, then i don't know what to think

I am with you on that, Henry. They could give the car lines and details that make it appear a little more coupe-like than it currently does, but to be honest the 3GS is already pretty damn coupey and I'm really not complaining. They definitely should not compromise interior space any more than they already have.

ah ic, you mean the styling and lines. yes, that can go more coupe like. but interior space wise the gs definitely has to get more space back

The GS already has a coupe-ish profile and is almost as impractical as a real coupe, so they might as well market it that way. The real question here is, should Lexus do a sedan, based on the 4-door coupe?

(half joking )
