Becareful...it's illegal is some states.
For instance FL.
"Florida state statutes state "flashing lights are prohibited on vehicles except as a means of indicating a right or left turn, to change lanes, or to indicate that the vehicle is lawfully stopped or disabled upon the highway".[24] There are some exceptions to the law, such as when a driver flashes his headlights to tell another driver that his headlights are off, but there is no exception for warning of speed traps.[24] A ticket for headlight flashing involves a moving violation and a $90 fine."

so you can't use the high beams to tell a slow driver to move over?

I have always done this as well. I view it as a common courtesy and gesture of goodwill to other drivers.
To me, it's on par with warning someone that they're about to step in something unpleasant, or not to use the vending machine that I just lost money in.

It probably died down around the mid 90's because of that stupid myth that gangbangers were targeting anyone for murder, who flashed them (because their headlights were off) as part of an initiation right.
