Paris 2010: Audi Quattro Concept celebrates 30 years of performance

Here they are folks, the first live images we've managed to snap of the Audi Quattro Concept that's currently being debuted at the Paris Motor Show. We expect to get much more closely acquainted with the machine over the next couple of days, but until then, take a gander at the machine that Audi crafted to celebrate 30 years of Quattro performance.

Keep in mind that this sucker is packing 408 horsepower from its turbocharged five-cylinder engine and routing all those ponies through a six-speed manual gearbox to all four wheels, making for a power-to-weight ratio on par with that of the Audi R8 5.2 FSI. See the rest of the details here. A fitting tribute, if we do say so ourselves.

If this is supposed to be a baby R8 (MR) then how are these newer renders' engine supposed to breathe?

That is the best Audi designers can do? It looks like a Audi version of the Volkswagen Corrado except the Corrado was a much better looking car back in the late 80's. It could be mistaken for some kind of Scion which is bad since knowing Audi it is going to be priced really high. Front end and rear end are terrible, overall look is a fwd front engined sport hatch, looks nothing like a rwd/awd mid engined mini R8 like the concepts. Why can't designers just make good looking cars with nice flowing designs these days? It looks like it was designed by a design committee that demanded some new weird brand identifiable styling cues that is supposed to set it apart over something just good looking. I was looking forward to this car based on the concepts and rendering but now that I see the final product it is a big disappointment.

Hey Lexus you watching?
They sure are, but that's about all they are doing...

The newer pics posted make this thing look more like a 1 Series(ish) car. So much for being a smaller/cheaper R8, if anything it looks like it would compete with the BMW 1M/M1 whatever they are calling it. Definitely a bit disappointing if it does in fact look like that.

Well surprise, surprise. Do my eyes deceive me or did Audi just take a swing at the WRC? Hidden at corner at Audi's Paris Show stand, is this scale model of the Quattro Concept in rally guise hinting at the possibility of Audi returning to the dirt/snow/tarmac stage that made the four rings what they are today. Who knows, maybe it's just there to look cool (but my fingers and toes are crossed).

If a return were to happen, and Audi built enough road-going cars to homologate the quattro for rallying (as it would have in the good old days), then everyone should get excited. Audi coming back to rallying brings about the level of excitement that Schumacher's F1 return did, although hopefully they would perform a little better after retirement than the one-time Formula 1 master.

Fans may recall a little something called group B with such epic Audi drivers as Michèle Mouton, Walter Röhrl, and Hannu Mikkola. It was a level of rallying that was reserved for the hardest of hardcore drivers, a time when brass cajones needed to be behind the wheel for the cars to even start (except Ms. Mouton, who is exempt in this case).

While Group B and its age of lawlessness are long-gone, Audi has absolutely no reason not to do this and show the world what rallying was like before Subaru and Mitsubishi came into the picture. If anyone has any juicy tidbits on what this rally-looking quattro model actually means, hit us up.
