Default First auctioned, customer-delivered 2011 Camaro convertible sells for $205,000

This comes right on the heels of the Camaro SS review I just did (which is still posted in CAR CHAT).

So you guys (and me) think that local Chevy dealers are charging big mark-up for the SS? Well, check this out. The second production 2011 convertible, right off the line (and the first to be delivered to a customer) went for an absurd $205,000. For that kind of money, the customer could have had a choice of number of entry-level Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Mercedes SL AMG, Aston Martins, etc.....

As we reported last week, the second 2011 Camaro convertible that will come off the assembly line was auctioned at Barrett-Jackson this past friday at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino. Proceeds were given to the YMCA of Southern Nevada.

The final auction price for the first customer Camaro convertible came in at an impressive $205,000.

GM products took up 3 of the top 5 sales spots. A 1981 Corvette coupe sold for $150,000 and the custom 2010 UFC Camaro coupe brought in $350,000.

Is it gonna be a collector's item? Probably not, unless if it's kept in pristine museum quality.

But I'm pretty sure that a collector with that kind of money to blow on a Chevy considers it play money...

I remember when the first Chevy SSR's came out....not that long ago. The first ones went for some $100,000 or so (I think Tom Cruise got one of them). We saw simliar mark-ups with the Plymouth Prowler. But nothing like 200K.

I remember the pos Prowlers and SSRs all too well, no surprise they are out of production.

POS or not (and I agree that they seem to have been done more for flash and retro-style than quality), people were certainly willing to pay to play. Apparantly not many people, though, because sales of those two vehicles never were much.

POS yes (and it's not just a quality issue), regardless they are approaching true value today, comparatively worthless versus what a few suckers paid way back when.

Heck, even the PT Cruiser was being sold for like $10-15K over list when they first came out, due to the high demand of it's "retro style".

Fidiots!

Agreed. Even as an auto enthusiast, there are few worse ways, IMO, to waste a lot of hard-earned money than to be overly-enamored with a new (or hot) design to the point where one is caught up in the Gotta Have/Gotta-Pay mode.

Yeah. I talked to a guy, at one of my favorite restaurants, at the time, who had just pulled in with a brand-new PT Cruiser....a white one. He admitted he had just paid a big mark-up (he told me how much, but I don't remember the amount). Said he didn't care.....it was only money. He and his wife both wanted the car.

Word is, the car (with proceeds to YMCA of Southern Nevada) was bought on behalf of Rick Hendrick for his collection...to park beside production '10 Camaros #1 and 2.

Charity sales, @ B-J, always fetch large $s...
