Basically, as far as the outside wood trim goes, on vehicles like the Chrysler Town & Country, Buick Estate wagon, Mercury Colony Park, PT Cruiser, etc.... that's more or less what the auto industry shifted to after the early 1950s. Substituting stick-on woodtone decals for real wood, of course, eliminated the problems of wood rot, termites, drying/cracking, and the periodic need to varnish/shellac or re-finish. All you needed to do, with the body stick-on decals, is put on a good coat of wax, just like with the paint itself.
The side panels of my Travelall were covered with the vinyl stick-on stuff. Provided pretty good protection from door dings and it was the only part of the vehicle that didn't rust.
