2011 Ducati 1198SP spied

News Link

This photo of the 2011 Ducati 1198 SP was snapped on the Intermot show floor in Germany.

So what’s an SP? Well, take an outgoing 1198S, add a slipper clutch, aluminum tank, a $1,400 Ohlins TTX shock, a quickshifter and a few other options, but — this is the kicker — we hear all that’s only going to cost $100 over the price of last year’s 1198S. (The 1198 SP will be priced at $21,895.)

Has Ducati suddenly decided to become the bargain of exotic Italian superbikes?

Is that a magnesium front fairing frame in front of the aluminum tank?

2011 is likely the last full model year for the 1198 so, to keep its products from gathering dust on store shelfs, Ducati’s heaped its superbikes full of extras. We’re not just talking some new paint colors either. Take the Ducati 1198 SP for instance, it replaces the “S” model, but brings with it 7-spoke forged Marchesini wheels, an aluminum fuel tank, a quick shifter and even a $1,400 Ohlins TTX shock, all for just a $100 premium over the old “S.” Meanwhile, the 2011 Ducati 1198 gains standard traction control and even a quick shifter.

We exclusively brought you news of the SP’s improved spec yesterday, but today’s official release adds news of the Marchesini wheels. Not only does the fuel tank weigh 2.2lbs less than the steel item on the old bike, but it also holds a little over a gallon extra, taking total fuel capacity up to 4.75 gallons. Available in black or red, the SP is distinguished by silver stripes.

The 1198 looks to be the real bargain though, gaining the Ducati Data Analysis package that was previously exclusive to the S and R an a quickshifter that’s new this year.

Ducati’s clearly trying to add some sex appeal to a soon-to-be-replaced model, but this level of standard spec being added essentially for free is nevertheless extremely impressive.
