UCS: Honda remains Greenest Automaker, Chrysler named Most Polluting

In 2009, Business Car claimed that Toyota was still the world's greenest automaker. That same year, the folks at Dow Jones named BMW the greenest automaker for the fifth time in a row. Apparently, an organization's methodology has a lot to do with automakers winning titles like this over and over, since the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) has just bestowed the Greenest Automaker Award on Honda, again for the fifth time in a row (the last time the award was given was in 2007).

At least this time, the race was close: Toyota and Hyundai (which lays claim to the most fuel-efficient automaker in the U.S.) tied for second, and their rankings were just a single point behind Honda. The most polluting automaker? Chrysler, but both Ford and General Motors were contenders for the title – blame their heavy mix of body-on-frame trucks.

The UCS ranks automakers based on the scores of their "smog-forming and greenhouse gas emissions (primarily CO2) in its U.S. automobile fleet." The 2010 award was based on model year 2008 data, the most recent information that was available for analysis.

Outside of the pure-electric auto companies like Tesla, Wheego, Corbin, etc..... I'd have to agree that Honda is one of the greenest of any mainstream manufacturers in terms of automotive pollution. But, as the article notes, more has to be taken into account than just tailpipe pollution. Pollution from the assembly plants, paint-processes, vehicle-recycling, etc..... also has to be considered.

No surprise. And given that "The UCS ranks automakers based on the scores of their smog-forming and greenhouse gas emissions (primarily CO2) in its U.S. automobile fleet", for good reason since automotive air pollution in the US is still the largest source of air pollution in major urban areas.

Agreed. Comparing full-line automakers to those that are not full line has little relevance.

Honda? Green? Not when their V6s get the same MPGs as V8s and their lean-burn tendencies produces high NOx levels...

Seriously. Honda is way behind in fuel efficiency. The only reason they won this pointless award is because they are not truly full line and they don't offer V-8's which are still necessary in large trucks and SUV's and should be offered in top line luxury cars. Honda offers none of these vehicles.

Really, there are only 4 full line automakers (at least based on US offerings)

Toyota
GM
Ford
Chrysler

VW perhaps if you count world wide offerings. But I'm not aware of any full size trucks/commercial trucks they make.

If Honda stuffed a V8 into the Pilot/Ridgeline, it would be almost equal to the MPG of a Ferrari/Lambo/Rolls/Bentley in the real world...

kind of random, but the Canadian Lexus plant boasts 0 landfill status.
