BMW to recall 150,000 vehicles in U.S.
DETROIT | Tue Oct 26, 2010 12:39pm EDT

DETROIT (Reuters) - BMW AG said on Tuesday that it would recall more than 150,000 vehicles in the United States due to the possibility of fuel pump failures.

BMW said some 130,000 of its 2007 to 2010 model year vehicles equipped with twin-turbo six-cylinder engines would be recalled for software updates and a potential replacement of a high-pressure fuel pump.

The automaker believes it will have to replace the high-pressure fuel pumps in 40,000 of the 130,000 vehicles.

BMW also is recalling separately about 20,800 of its 2008 model year X5 SUVs that have six-cylinder engines to replace the low-pressure fuel pumps.

N54 engine in the 535.Same problem.
There's even some '11 N55 single turbos with the problem.
Same pump is used on the single turbo.

I assume its only 130k b/c most sold are _28 models not 335 models.

Approximately 130,000 vehicles are potentially affected with about 40,000 expected to require a new high pressure fuel pump.
That is a 1 in 3 failure rate. Funny I thought there wasn't a problem.

So did they actually fix the problem or are they just doing some preemptive pump changes?

Yeah, what good is the recall if they put in the same screwed up pumps? At least when Audi/VW had their big coilpack recall (circa 2002), they redesigned the component before issuing it. BMW's recall is no more than admitting there's a problem and not having a real fix for it.

You're not the only one who is confused. And judging by some of the BMW forums out there, we aren't alone either. I just hope that the owner's issues are resolved in a correct manner. I guess in a strange way, this will take some of the steam out of the Toyota/Lexus bashing that's been existing over the past year.

I would guess that this has to be a media reporting issue. The 5 can't possibly be the exception to the rule. That or BMW is still in major denial...lol.

Great question.

I missed the actual solution to the problem. Replacing the HPFP with new ones just to have them fail again doesn't seem like much of a fix....but more a media reaction.

or maybe they see not many 535 owners complaining so they try to save a few bucks

Any X35 BMW with the twin turbos have the problem.
Even the 735i twin turbo has had some fuel pump issues.

Wow I never thought I would see the day, but BMW finally issued a recall for this problem. Good for them, but disappointing it took this long and all that bad press for them to do it.
