That's true, but as Lil points out, very little attention was paid to actual crash safety in the design. The public, in general, was more interested in size, power, chrome, styling, and comfort.......safety simply didn't sell.

 

Amazing engineering, from touching and knocking on the 50s car, they sure feel a lot stronger than today's cars!
