Default Open poll: Most reliable car maker?

Wasn't sure how to create this, so left it as open, moderators maybe can modify... for now I segmented by global region

Okay, so in light of all the current recalls (some proactive, some because of real issues), what is the most reliable automaker? Criteria: practical, some "fun" models, fuel efficient, low maintenance, "decent" customer service and car maker produces upgrades and/or new and desireable cars.

Should be interesting....

NONE of those criteria make a car reliable.

Reliable = fewest problems.

Even with recalls, some recalled cars didn't have a problem in the first place.

Maintenance intervals: it's independent of how reliable it is. A car can be meticulously maintained and still be crap.

But if you want a car with the least amount of repair maintenance, mechanical, and electrical issues; Japanese cars in general are still engineered to me more reliable than most.

Wow. . . because automakers are destined to be good or bad based on region of origin???? So you're saying Suzuki is as good as Honda but both are worse Ford? Daewoo, anybody? Jeez, there are far too many exceptions for each and every region to declare one better than the other, IMO.

This should be broken down by manufacturer. . . and even then, there are even big discrepancies between different models from the same manufacturer.

I agree. The poll choices are horrible.

Oh yeah, don't forget about Cherry and Geely! And what region does Tata belong to? And then again, Tata also owns Jaguar and Land Rover, so where do they belong?

You guys don't read too thoroughly... I said for now I'd break it down by region or I'd have to list 50 manufacturers... and had to come up with some kind of "criteria" to give a baseline. This is OPEN FOR A REASON and a TALKING POINT based on current events (IE Toyota's latest recall.... you may have heard about it)

Why don't YOU come up with the poll/criteria or do better....... I know I'll be waiting

UNREAL

Not only that, but some car makers may not be inclined or pressured to recall vehicles for certain issues compared to other car makers that - for one reason or another - may just happen to be under greater federal scrutiny at the moment.

This is why "number of recalls" is by no means a foolproof way to quantitatively assess reliability.

It's impossible to do a voting poll, unless you have options. . . maybe put up the big manufacturers, maybe the top 14 likely candidates. But there's no point to even having a poll at all if there aren't reasonable choices to choose from. It's like, asking who the best person in the world is, and listing a bunch of different ethnicities to choose from.

If you want criteria, I can see two major ones:
1) Cost of maintenance / Time of Ownership
2) Down-time / Time of Ownership

Real world would likely be some sort of blend of the two. . . but in the pure definition of reliability, criteria 2 would be more correct. However, for practical reasons, criteria 1 also bears a lot of impact.
