You can't get ABS from Acura for $500 and it's still more practical as a DD
Acura- for the discerning driver when less than ugly and irrelevant just won't do...
HUGE for the CBR250R!!!!

That's not just an outstanding starter bike, but a capable and inexpensive commuter as well. I had a '71 SL 175 - a high-revving twin (redline at 11,500 rpm) that was promoted as a combo enduro/offroad bike. With practically no low end grunt, it was problematic in the dirt, but a pretty nice little commuter that was dead reliable.
It was basic; with no more than a kick-starter and point-ignition system, there wasn't a whole lot to go wrong. Oddly enough, that little screamer down between your toes could really pour on the power at freeway speeds, however it ran out of torque at about 90mph. That's OK, it had plenty of passing power - well, so long as you weren't trying to set a land speed record. Best of all it was cheap, selling for something like $550 back in the day.
I developed a serious dirt bike fetish the following year and upgraded to a 250, then a 400cc 'Zuke that made some serious torque, but was no longer street legal. It was however loud enough not to require a horn. Picture someone firing a Thompson next to your head all day - that was the effect of the 400. As it came on the power band it could literally make your eyeballs vibrate in their sockets. Lots of entertainment value in this lightweight rocket, but NO consideration for comfort. The Honda had that market all sewn up. I'd happily go back to something like the CBR - well maybe except for its exhaust note . . . I got a John Deere mower that sounds better.
