Default Would you use an iPhone app that replaced your Key Fob?

I am a student at the University of Texas at Dallas, and am doing market research for a project. Please let me know if you would purchase an iPhone app to replace your key. No additional installation would be required for your vehicle. You would simply need an iPhone and a Lexus with keyless entry. I simply need to know if this is something that would interest the Lexus consumer.

Thank you!

I think iPhone/Smartphone apps will help make it easier to access a lot of other electronic devices, including cars.

For example, the MINI e Scooter concept uses it.

An iPhone is used as the key and console and Nav system.

Connect it to a Bluetooth-enabled helmet, and you're good to go! Voice-activated Navigation and phone calls!!!

The issue for me is: What's the point? I would still have to carry around a key chain for my other keys, so why not just keep carrying my FOB on the key chain? Not to mention I'm screwed if my phone battery dies, freezes, breaks, I lose my phone, etc...

If I didn't have to carry around other keys than it would be a great idea, but I don't think it would be practical for a lot of people.

hahha, it would be funny to "accidentally" delete this app from someone's iphone and it was their only method to start the car.

Being able to control the power windows, locks and remote start from the phone would be nice. I know I've been in my office at work a few times where I've left the windows cracked only to have to run out and close them as a quick afternoon shower rolls through. Would be nice to fire up an app and roll them up when it rains, or down to cool the car before I leave.

As a replacement for the key, I would fear something happen to the phone and I would be SOL.

I would use it if I lost my keys but I am so used to hands free key ownership that I actually hate driving cars where I have to dangle with the keys and pop the button to unlock the door.

As long as my factory key still worked, absolutely. Cell phones are more easily lost than keys. Also, my cell needs to be charged a LOT, can't rely on it 100%. There has to be a backup option.

I have yet to own a car that's newer than 2001 so correct me if I'm wrong, but a car with no keyhole makes me nervous. If the battery (car or fob) dies, how do I get in?

Maybe but probably not. A key fob isn't that big, and our cars are keyless so I don't need to press the unlock alarm button or insert a key to start it so I don't find it a big enough convience to replace. Now, if it was just a secondary tool where I lost my keys or something, sure.

As for lowering your windows when it is hot, you can already do that with your key fob. Just hold down the unlock button and your windows and moonroof will open. The longer you hold it, the more it will open until it is completely open.
