Honda has just announced that the "next generation of Honda hybrid technology" will be revealed next month at the Los Angeles Auto Show, along with a plug-in hybrid platform and a electric vehicle concept. Honda, a long vocal opponent of PHEVs and EVs, appears to finally be changing their tune and hopefully we'll all get a great new IMA system out of the deal.
Rumors have been swirling around that the next-gen Civic Hybrid will put up better-than-Prius MPG numbers, and we all know that in order for Honda to deliver on that they'll have to first scrap improve the current Integrated Motor Assist hybrid system.

Will believe it when I see it. Have ZERO faith in Honda right now. Chances are they will achieve the higher mpgs, but wrap it up in another frumpy and bizarrely styled package. Why stray from total failure when you are on a role?

It's nice, of course, if they can get the IMA mileages up to the levels of the Toyota hybrids, but, as I see it, the real problem with the Honda IMA systems is not mileage but smoothness/refinement. Almost every Honda-designed IMA system I've driven, especially in the small entry-level cars, has had small but noticeable bumps and jerks when the electric motor cuts in and out. On the Civic Hybrid, I remember, when you take your foot off the brake pedal at idle to start up again, the car actually jerks forward a little when the computer releases the brakes and engages the electric motor to re-start the gas engine (which shuts off at idle). On the Insight, the bumps and jerks seem even more pronounced, but it doesn't jerk forward as much on a re-start from idle. On the CR-Z, combined with the CVT, you get incessant surging/motorboating/rubber-banding. These undesirable features, IMO, should get as much, if not more, attenton than a simple mileage increase.
