So I saw this telephone in that James Bond's 1964 Aston Martin DB5 that was just auctioned off for a tons of money, I didn't think too much of it because it was a movie car, the phone was probably fictional and doesn't work.

Then I just saw this real coachbuild Rolls Royce commissioned by a rich guy back in 1954, so this phone must work, it is not just there to be cool? They sure didn't have any kind of wireless phone technology back in the 50s, so what, they connect it to a landline when the car is stop?![Uhh...](https://www.clublexus.com/forums/images/smilies/1387914497.gif)

It is probably a radio like they used in WW2, where you "dial" or connect to a dedicated listening station, and then the operator will then patch you to the number you want via their land line.

Back in '71,I remember the TV series Cannon.
William Conrad played a PI and had a phone in his Lincoln Mark III through Mark V when the show was canceled years later.![Smilie](https://www.clublexus.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
From Wiki.
In an era decades before cell phone use, Cannon was using a "mobile phone" in his car, which was highly rare at the time. He would begin by asking the mobile operator to dial a call for him. These type of phones were precursors to standard cell phone service. The phone itself, in his car, actually looked like a standard handset of the day with a dangling wire.

Years before cellphones my dad had a phone in his car (it cost something like the equivalent of $4000 at the time). It was supplied through British Telecom and you dialled like a normal phone and a wireless transmitter in the boot sent the call over a dedicated frequency to the main switchboard where it was then routed via the landlines to its destination. It worked pretty well as long as you were near main population centres.
(It worked even better when we managed to stop him saying "over" at the end of every sentence and "over and out" at the end of every call.)

Back then, very few cars had phones, and even fewer mass-produced cars. It was considered a mega-luxury item, pretty much limited to cars like Rolls, Mercedes Limos, Cadillac/Lincoln limos for Heads-of-State, and some exotics like James Bond's Aston.
