I guess majority of America fuel pumps/stations is self-service (?) so yeah, I guess full-service is definitely not the norm there I presume.

For me, I had a hard time with the learning curve of how to operate a fuel pump nozzle for the first time (when we visited Reno, Nevada). Yup, that includes Shell, those owned/operated by ConocoPhilipps and whatnot.

That and I still can't understand what the "9/10" means when look at fuel prices in America

Also, is:
1 Gallon = 4 liters

Correct or not?

1 gallon is 3.78 liters, in parts of Europe gas (petrol) is about $1.70 american per liter, so 3.78x1.70=6.426 Yeap thats right

I always wondered about the 9/10 thing too.
No Chevrons in my area and I would use Chevron exclusively like I do with Shell.
No Texaco's anymore either.
I like the Techron additive.

the 9/10 is adding .9c to the cost of a gallon so they can squeeze even more money from us.

Just add the 1/10 and make more money on each gallon.
Why the 9/10's?

It's not the cost of fuel or amount of fuel topped off that you should be concerned about. The filling to the "click" is because the tank is full and anything added on top of that can either:
a) harm you charcoal filter
b) waste gas

When you top off, some of that gas you topped off with won't end up in your gas tank. Most pumps have a fuel recovery system so that you can't overfill and spill gas out into the atmosphere, meaning all that excess gas just goes back into the tank underground.

So you don't want to be wasting money you don't need to spend and you don't want to damage your fuel system.

The 9/10ths thing is to simply make the price per gallon appear 1 cent lower than it really is. They think we're all stupid or something.
These days, a penny is worthless yet they're the only system in the world using 10ths of a cent as a measure.

One thing not discussed yet is the perception in most areas of not pumping your own gas.

The perception is that only old ladies and select other women have to have an attendant pump their gas. A man wouldn't be caught dead remaining in his car while someone else pumps their gas. It's very emasculating. Sorry Jersey, that's the reality in the rest of the country.

But that wouldn't serve their purpose. If they rounded the price up 1/10ths, the price would appear a full cent higher. Can't have that, now can we?

It's a common sales technique. When you glance at the sign you see $3.59. Add that 1/10 to the 9/10, you see a sign that says $3.60. Subconsciously, you think wow that's way more expensive.

Then again, it could be back when gas was 99 cents a gallon. No one wanted to break the $1.00 barrier. That didn't last long did it?

I just glanced at the internet that 9/10 nets the gas companies $1.7 billion USD in additional revenue!

I like pumping my own gas but some states don't have the flow adjustment and you have to hold the pump. That stinks.

Same reason why most prices in stores end in a 9.

Stores always place a price of $9.99 instead of $10.00 for example. That 1 cent adds a whole digit. Sure, it's a worthless penny, but to stupid people they think they're getting a deal.

Like I said, it's all about insurance regulations here in Jersey. I know how to pump my own
