Garage Door/Opener questions
How does one figure out the code that goes into the remote for a garage door opener?
If the remotes are broken, how do you buy new remotes?
Can you program the homelink with the garage door opener connected to the opener or only from a remote?
Any help appreciated, thanks!

Dont lose the remote
but I think you can only set it via the remote because you actually need to hold the remote 1 inch away from the homelink buttons so that the code can be saved, or duplicated.

Mine is a chamberlain, so i went to walmart, bought a remote/transmitter that was compatible with chamberlain, then went back home and followed the directions that came w/ the remote to program it. the programming took about a minute or 2 at most.

there's only 3 types
1) fixed code - dip switch type and your opening/closing code is fixed
2) revolving - learn button on the opener, that will program both a handheld remote and a homelink system in your car.
3) revolving, non-learnable - apartment complexes with garages use these. they give you a remote that works, but a universal remote won't program and neither will homelink in your car

Any unit manufactured after 1996 will have rolling code technology. It will also have a learning button that after pressing gives you 30 seconds to transmit and link with the homelink button you have programmed in the car. Some manufacturers will place the learning button under the light diffuser.
