Post Ford: Yes, Camaro will outsell Mustang this year

http://www.autoblog.com/2010/12/23/f...ang-this-year/

George Pipas, Ford’s sales analyst, told a group of reporters this week that the automaker isn’t particularly concerned about the Chevrolet Camaro outselling the Mustang this year for the first time since 1985.

“If that was important, we wouldn't have taken a shift off at Flat Rock,” the Michigan factory that builds the Mustang, he said.

Yet another sign that Ford’s insistence that it will only chase profitable sales is for real.

Through November, Ford had sold 68,264 Mustangs. Chevy had sold 75,685 Camaros.

chevy/gm of course, doesn't have to play on a level playing field, operating with money stolen from taxpayers. ford has to do a real p&l, pay real debts.

It goes beyond simply where the money originates, Paul. The figures show that GM has finally gotten smart enough (or simply able enough) to build enough Camaros to meet demand. Last year, for example, when the car was introduced, only some 5000 were built........possibly (?) because of the bankrupcy The entire year's model run sold out in a couple of weeks.......yes, before I could even test-drive one. I had to settle, at first, for a static write-up of a red RS model sitting in the showroom.

This year, of course, they are much more readily available on the lot, but 6MT SS models are still hard to find. I stumbled across the unsold black 6MT SS I reviewed a couple of months ago virtually by a fluke (it was, as I remember, sold later that same day).

the automaker isn’t particularly concerned about the Chevrolet Camaro outselling the Mustang this year for the first time since 1985.
One must also remember that, in 1985, the competing Dodge Challenger was not a factor like it was in 1970-74. Now that the Challenger is back in production, it is taking sales from both the Mustang and Camaro. Although I don't have hard figures, the Challenger, from what I've been able to see on local area roads, seems to be doing quite well against both of its rivals.

No surprise being as tho the star of one of the biggest trilogies of the the past 5 years(Transformers) happens to be a camaro. That, imo, played a big part of the success of the camaro. Everyone wanted to ride around in "Bumblebee". Those movies are a big marketing/sales boost for the car.

Test drove the 2010 Mustang V6. I liked it. Fit and finish, and the quality of the materials is great.

The Camaro OTOH just doesn't appeal to me, particularly the design of the interior. So go Mustang!

Did you drive a 6MT model? On the new Mustang GT I reviewed, the manual transmission had two annoying features......a 1-4 skip-shift feature for fuel economy, and difficult gates to get the lever in and out of. I did not find the lever-action smooth and slick like on the Camaro SS. The V6, though, may not (?) have the skip-shift feature that the V8s do.

I can't say anything for the Camaro but I've rented a convertible GT for a day and I was very unimpressed with the interior quality and power delivery.

I really think the Mustang is better. While the interior isn't amazing, it still beats the camaro in that regard. The new V6 and 5.0 really give it a step up to.

I'd take the Challenger though. Really think its a good combo. The new engine, and its got some good muscle car looks.

Mustang all the way. The new 5.0 is a beast. Easy 11 second car with a few bolt-on's. The new camaro is ok I guess. The tail lights remind me of an old pair of ray ban's.

I'll take a Challenger over both personally.

The new Camaro's seem to be really popular around here. Everybody seems to want one, so I could definitely see it outselling the new Mustang.
