Default Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG to Keep Beastly 6.2-liter V8

Found this on one of the MB boards... I too had heard the new C63 AMG was moving to the twin V-8... C63 is top of my list (Dec 24th ) right now I LOVE this car!!!

http://blog.caranddriver.com/2012-me...-6-2-liter-v8/

Contrary to speculation—including by us—Mercedes now tells us that the C63 AMG will keep its normally aspirated 6.2-liter V-8 when it is face-lifted for the 2012 model year. Much of the cosmetic revisions will be based on those received by the regular ‘12 C-class (seen at right), which goes on sale here next summer; we expect the AMG to arrive a few months later.

The decision not to fit AMG’s new, twin-turbo 5.5-liter V-8 is a curious one, and it will mean the C63 AMG will be less efficient than bigger AMG 63 cars that use the new mill, including the S63 AMG, the CL63 AMG, and the CLS63 AMG. We were told that “the new engine wouldn’t fit,” but we think that real reason is that it’s more cost-effective to carry-over the 6.2 in a car with a profit margin nowhere near as high as those of the other AMG models. It’s also very good news for enthusiasts. The 6.2-liter V-8, engineered by former AMG man Bernd Ramler, is one of the finest engines on the market, free-revving and very sensitive to throttle input. We like it better than the new 5.5, and it also sounds glorious.

I think its so it doesn't come close to the power of pricier models. Still a great engine and it also lets Benz offer N/A power for those that don't want forced induction.

Great move to me.

sounds like so, just like they did c55 and it didn't have superchargers while its brothers were all supercharged. a bit bummer though, i was thinking if it's FI, it's better fuel efficient, and i couldn't wait to see how people boost that thing up

the 6.2L just drinks gas too crazily

Henry, +1... while I love NA, this is my biggest (and only) concern as well... what is your "real world" for the M3? I'm looking at 75% freeway, 25% city...

PM if you don't want to thread jack

I think the move to keep the 6.2 is good, only draw back is glacier-melting CO2 output and bad mileage... the engine is proven and reliable... the weight and set-up make this the best of the AMG sedans regardless of the engine

Also... thx for the info Henry!!!

Why isnt it called a C62 than if it's not a 6.3 liter?

That is an often-asked question... I have heard many answers, but seems it dates back to the 1966 300SEL 6.3... and Germans apparently have a hard time lowering numbers despite lowered displacement

amg has always done this. the 55 is actually a 5.4 liter engine and the c32 is not a 3.2 liter engine either.

Glad to see the 6.2 sticking around so that at least not everything is going down the drain to forced induction.

The 55s (supercharged or not) did use the 5.4, but I'm pretty sure the AMG supercharged variant of the E32 M112 engine is still actually the same 3.2 as in the regular unit.
