Default Lexus Plans On Big Changes After 2012-2014: No More Navigation?

I don't have an actual article, or any references to back up what I have to say; this is just what my cousin told me.

Supposedly, a manager at a Lexus dealership told him this news (most likely a rumor)

But from what he told me, Lexus is thinking of having changes to all their models in the future. They plan on not having anymore Navigation options for any models, instead, they're going to have a contract with Apple, and that they're going to have space big enough for an iPad.

I know, it sounds really dumb (I actually think it could be cool, but I don't think it'll happen, just cause of what the RX and HS have shown us with the future of navigation for Lexus), but this is what he heard.

Be gentle with the flaming/bashing/whatever.

Um, I don't think so. If its anyone who'd have a contract with an Apple iPad vehicle interface system, it'd be Hyundai and its Equus.

Then again, who knows.

That actually wouldn't be a bad idea for the hardware solution. There would have to be a lot of custom software but, as an iPad owner, I'm sure the device could easily replace the DVD reader and most of the nav hardware in the trunk - aside from the actual GPS receiver. Other functions that it could also handle:

- Music storage and all other radio functions
- Bluetooth phone and emergency notification
- All the HVAC controls and display.

I don't know if the device should be removable from the car, though. "Sorry dear, I can't make it any warmer in the car because I left my iPad at home. And no, I can't change the country station on the radio either."

Yes, this does seem odd to me. The iPad interface is nearly all touch oriented and Lexus is all for safety and preventing the driver from interacting with distractions while driving. Flicking the screen on an iPad just doesn't seem like the "Lexus Way".

Merry Xmas!
Well from my understanding the next GS will have a 10 or 12" screen and Lexus has moved to HDD based systems, no more disks.

We also know Toyota is going
to unveil a Fors like "sync" system and Lexus is going to gain something similar as
well.

I can see a lot of brands offering an ipad
with a new car purchase.

With all the tablets coming out and being offered it's only a matter of time, my Droid X surpasses my Factory Nav in so many ways, to have all the convenient options of say Google Maps, and then some would be great, currently Factory Nav in cars is one of those options that does not age well

I doubt tablets will replace navigation systems in cars. The tech is constantly changing, as is size and compatibility, so any car that was fitted as such would be completely obsolete and unusable in 1-2 years. No automaker could afford a shelf life like that, especially when you consider how long people keep and use cars. Resale values would plummet...the list goes on.

I can see there being a supplemental input for tablets, just like iPods, but I don't predict PDAs replacing in-car technology.

Doesn't real to me sorry but that will be outdated so quickly, with technology rapidly changing, I rather stick to built in GPS with a outdated map, then software on a iPad or whatever tablet I might be then remove it everytime. Honestly I think this idea will just cause more break ins to vehicles.

There will be so many car thefts because of that.

Any news on what engines Lexus will debut on the next IS350 or IS-F?
Is the F keeping a V8 since the M is headed to a I6 and turbo?

Thanks

In a recent Lexus inquiry on the electronics topic, I asked for an iPad to replace the current sceen set ups.

1) Anything is better than an iDrive derived set up
2) Templin admitted they can't keep up with tech so just leave it to Apple
3) Having an iPad does not keep Lexus from having their own software package driving the screen.
4) As long as Apple keeps a standard size/packaging, this set up would allow for easy updates through swap outs.
5) Using a standard gizmo like an iPad will reduce costs both to build and repair. When my Nav screen died, the dealer said a complete system is as much as $11K.
6) Internet stuff is going to be common in cars and the iPad makes that part easy.
7) Who makes better interfaces than Apple?
8) If Apple hardware is in place from the factory, iPhone integration will be perfect
