Thumbs up December 2010 and Year End Auto Sales: Lexus #1 for the 11th year in a row!

Fight to the finish for BMW, Benz, Lexus!

Auto Sales Finishing 2010 Strong, But Recovery Will Be Slow In 2011

December 27th, 2010 While the U.S. auto market outlook can hardly be called bullish, sales this past month are pointing to some growth, and some further steps toward a rebound, in 2011. And that rebound still looks quite far away. AutoPacific is anticipating 12.4 million next year, and J.D. Power predicts that U.S. sales will reach 12.8 million next year and potentially a 15-million rate by 2012. Meanwhile Edmunds is anticipating a sales rate of 11.5 million vehicles for 2010 and predicting 12.9 million vehicles sold in 2012. For full-year 2010, J.D. Power is anticipating 11.6 million vehicles sold, and AutoPacific anticipates 11.4 million sales—the same figure that it predicted for 2010 a year ago. One positive indicator is that even as retail sales are perking up, automakers have reduced new-car incentives levels to their new vehicles, on average, compared to earlier in the economic slowdown. That's potentially related to the easier availability of credit and financing options the past several months, but also due to the introduction of a range of desirable new mass-market vehicles including the new 2011 Chevrolet Cruze, 2011 Hyundai Sonata, and 2011 Kia Optima. Another piece of good news is the growth in retail—as opposed to fleet—sales. According to Edmunds, sales earlier in the year had been supported by growth in fleet sales, as both rental-car companies and corporations moved to replace vehicles. However, at the end of the year, retail sales are showing signs of a serious recovery, with the retail sector up from 710,000 last month to an expected 912,000 this month, according to Edmunds, while Power puts total light-vehicle sales at their highest seasonally-adjusted level all year. But as far as five years into the future, AutoPacific doesn't see the U.S. industry returning to the 17-million unit volumes that were seen not so many years ago, however.

Rising prices, due both to new vehicle technologies and the upcoming federal fuel economy (CAFE) rules, will limit market expansion, the firm said. "Even with economic recovery, various economic indicators such as consumer confidence, home values, and perhaps most tellingly, unemployment, remain at worrying levels," said Ed Kim, Director of Industry Analysis at AutoPacific. AutoPacific emphasizes that the U.S. market will continue to further splinter and segment into smaller niche models and nameplates—meaning that there might be 320 nameplates or more in the market by 2016, which is the last time volume was at the 15.7 million rate predicted for 2016. "Thus, each nameplate will be fighting for a smaller piece of the pie, making it tougher for each of those nameplates to be profitable," argues the firm in a sales forecast. At Lexus, BMW and Mercedes-Benz headquarters, the 2010 U.S. luxury sales title isn't officially a race. But don't tell that to the dealers, who are using big wads of factory cash to move the iron as the year winds down.

Lexus has been the top-selling U.S. luxury brand for 10 straight years, but this year both BMW and Mercedes-Benz are close. Through November, Lexus leads with sales of 201,769 -- 4,936 units ahead of BMW and 5,393 ahead of Mercedes, when Mercedes' Sprinter vans are excluded.

And this month all three brands are making dealer cash a bigger part of their incentive mix. That's in addition to some customer cash, low-interest financing on every model and huge lease-subsidy deals such as a Mercedes C300 for $339 a month for 36 months.

"There's heavy utilization of dealer cash this month," said Jesse Toprak, vice president of industry trends for TrueCar.com.

"But the leasing and financing deals that have run all year are also moving the metal."

BMW and Mercedes dealers get $10,000 or more cash on larger 2010 models, while Lexus is giving dealers up to $4,000 on the 2010 LS 600h L and LS 460.

In an unusual move, BMW is also paying dealers an additional $250 a unit, retroactively, if they hit their 4th-quarter sales quota. For Ted Datri, general manager of BMW of Dallas, that number is 473 units.

"It will be very difficult," Datri said. "But it's $120,000, and that is quite a bit of money."

Mike Devan, general manager of Mercedes-Benz of Pompano in Pompano Beach, Fla., likes the incentive mix of winter-event specials, $2,000 loyalty cash on the E class, $1,000 conquest cash and a pull-ahead lease program that forgives the final 3 to 5 payments.

But he says the $10,000 dealer cash on many 2010 models is irrelevant this month. "I blew out all my '10s in November," he said.

Despite their year-end incentives, luxury brands publicly play it cool.

For example, last month BMW CEO Norbert Reithofer said balancing volume, incentive spending and residual values is more important than a sales title.

"It is not our 1st priority to overtake Lexus in America," he said. "It is to be a very good premium brand."

John Mantione, general manager of Fields BMW in Winter Park, Fla., said BMW's year-end incentives mix is more focused, but restrained.

"I don't see them opening the bank account just for a title," he said. "I don't think that is their mind-set, and it will be a profitable plan for them."

Owner George Sharpe of Sharpe BMW in Grand Rapids, Mich., said his brand doesn't need a sales crown: "We want to win as many customers as we can, but our goal is not to beat Lexus."

According to estimates by TrueCar.com, BMW is spending $3,162 per vehicle in December, down from $5,600 last year. Lexus is outspending BMW with an outlay of $3,580, compared to $1,275 last December. Mercedes' spending is down $105 to $4,195.

Automakers have used more lease and financing deals this year because of the unusually low cost of money.

But makers of luxury cars traditionally sweeten the pot of dealer cash this time of year to hide the year-end sales push from customers, analyst Toprak said.

"Luxury brands need volume to drive profitability, like any automaker,"
he said.

"But they can't be seen to be chasing the No. 1 spot, because what they're really selling to their customers is exclusivity."

I must say I am surprised to see such a great national lease deal being advertised on the 2011 Sonata. $199 a month on a new midsize model is quite low. With the dated 2011 Camry, you can only get a $249 a month national lease deal. It makes me wonder, if the Sonata is so popular, why such a desperately low lease deal? Is Hyundai trying to give them away?

Also the Prius in Japan is about to achieve a historic record. It is about to break the record for all-time annual sales for a single model in Japan. The record currently belongs to the Toyota Corolla, which achieved record annual sales in 1990. Despite the overall Japan car market being down sales-wise, for the Prius to be on the verge of breaking the record is absolutely astonishing. Roughly 300,000 Corollas were sold in Japan in 1990. Up to the end of November, roughly 297,000 Prius models were sold in Japan this year so the Prius is basically guaranteed to get the record once December sales are out.

General Motors 2010 Calendar Year Sales Up 21 Percent; December Sales Increase 16 Percent - Best Month of 2010

DETROIT, Jan. 4, 2011 /PRNewswire/ --
  • GM’s four brands sell 118,435 more vehicles in 2010 than eight brands did in 2009
  • GM December retail sales up 27 percent, best month in 2010
  • Chevrolet sales improve 16 percent in 2010
  • Buick sales rose 52 percent in 2010 – the highest improvement of any major brand
  • GMC increased sales 29 percent for the year
  • Cadillac sales gain of 35 percent in 2010 is the highest for major luxury brands

General Motors dealers reported 223,932 total sales in December, a 16-percent increase from a year ago for the company’s four brands. The gain was driven by solid retail sales which were 27 percent higher than a strong December a year ago. For the calendar year, total sales for GM’s four brands increased 21 percent to 2,202,927, while retail sales rose 16 percent for the year. GM’s four brands sold 118,435 more vehicles this year than the company did with eight brands in 2009, and will gain total and retail market share for the year.
The December total sales result includes an anticipated reduction in fleet sales to rental companies. For the month, overall fleet sales represented 17 percent of GM’s total sales.
According to Don Johnson, vice president, U.S. sales operations, the company’s annual sales performance shows the strong focus of the new company.
“Our sales this year reflect the impact of GM’s new business model,” Johnson said. “The consistency of results that we achieved demonstrates the focus on our brands, dealers and customers, and how we compete aggressively for every sale, every day.”
In December GM’s industry-leading lineup of fuel-efficient crossovers continued to gain in popularity with consumers. Sales of GM crossovers rose 42 percent versus December 2009. For the year, GM crossover sales were 50 percent higher than in 2009. GM sold 567,458 crossovers in the United States in 2010, far more than any other automaker.
Since 2005, the crossovers’ proportion of the U.S. market has almost doubled to about 22 percent of the industry. In the same period, crossovers as a proportion of GM sales have increased more than threefold and now represent 26 percent of the company’s sales volume.
“The crossover market is a great example of how consumers can have their cake and eat it too,” Johnson said. “More and more, consumers are choosing to purchase fuel-efficient crossovers like the 32-mpg highway-rated Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain because they get everything they want – comfort, utility and quality.”
In December, sales of the Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain set records for each model (22,764 and 9,303 respectively) and led GM’s crossover gains – a result of improving availability. For the year, sales of these compact crossovers were up 74 percent and 331 percent respectively, enabling them to gain market share in the compact crossover segment where sales rose an estimated 27 percent year-to-date through December. In the mid-luxury crossover segment, the Cadillac SRX gained more share than any entry, with sales up 152 percent for the year.
GM’s full-size pickup truck sales improved 29 percent in December versus a year ago, when the company was clearing out a high proportion of past model-year trucks. During the month, 89 percent of GM’s full-sized pickup trucks sold were 2011 model year vehicles compared to 22 percent new model year trucks (2010) during the same month last year. In 2010, combined sales of the Chevrolet Avalanche, Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra full-size pickups increased to 520,444 units – up 17 percent compared to 2009.
Total sales of GM passenger cars declined 6 percent during December, driven by anticipated lower fleet sales. However, retail sales of GM passenger cars rose 14 percent for the month, led by improving demand for the all-new Chevrolet Cruze, Buick Regal and Cadillac CTS Coupe. For the year, sales of GM passenger cars improved 20 percent.
Month-end dealer inventory in the United States stood at about 511,000 units, which is about 25,000 lower compared to November and about 126,000 higher than December 2009.

CTS retail sales rose 70 percent, driven by strong demand for the all-new CTS Coupe. The Escalade family had its best retail month since December 2008, up 30 percent versus a year ago. Total sales for Cadillac are up 35 percent for the year.
  • Fleet sales for GM’s four brands were 37,658 for the month, a 21 percent decline from the prior year, due to a 35 percent reduction in sales to rental fleets. Commercial fleet sales rose 8 percent during the month, the ninth straight month of gains.

Chrysler Group LLC today reported U.S. sales of 100,702, a 16% increase compared with sales in December 2009 (86,523 units).

Chrysler Group sales of 1,085,211 units in 2010 increased 17% compared with 2009 sales.

“Chrysler Group 2010 sales of 1.1 million units are consistent with our sales objective that we presented in our Nov. 4, 2009 5-year business plan,”
said Fred Diaz, President and Chief Executive Officer – Ram Truck Brand and Lead Executive for U.S. Sales. “We are extremely proud of the sales strides we made during this transition year. Chrysler Group launched 16 all-new or significantly-improved models last year, most of them during the 4th quarter. We can now share our excitement with our customers as our new 2011 models arrive in dealerships in greater volumes over the coming months.”

Chrysler Group finished the year by topping the 100,000-unit sales mark for the 3rd time in 2010. Adding to the strong sales finish, the all-new 2011 Jeep® Grand Cherokee and all-new 2011 Dodge Durango were named finalists for the 2011 North American Truck of the Year award. The winners will be announced Jan. 10 at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

Also in December, 5 Chrysler Group vehicles — the new Dodge Avenger, Dodge Journey, Chrysler 200, Jeep Grand Cherokee and Jeep Patriot — were named Top Safety Picks for 2011 by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

Post Ford in Canada

Ford Motor Co. of Canada officially claimed the top sales spot in Canada in 2010, surpassing General Motors of Canada for the 1st time since such records have been kept.

Ford also said Tuesday that with 97,913 units sold in 2010 in Canada, its F-Series pick-up trucks were also the best-selling vehicle ever in a single year in Canadian history. The news comes as truck sales for the industry as whole in Canada are poised to outsell passenger cars for the 1st time in the country as well, driven by the hefty incentives being offered to consumers.

"Sales titles are nice to have but we remain focused on building long-term, sustainable, profitable growth," said David Mondragon, Ford of Canada chief executive. "We expect the Canadian market to grow moderately this year, by about 2%."

Ford said it finished the year with its strongest December sales in more than a decade with 19,477 cars and trucks sold during the month, up 8.6% from a year ago. That added to the 19% sales increase experienced at the automaker in 2010, which saw 267,974 Ford vehicles sold across the country, up from 225,216 in 2009. Results were driven by strong performance across the entire lineup including the Ford Focus, Fusion, Mustang, Taurus, Transit Connect, Escape, Edge, Lincoln MKX and MKT, which all saw year-over-year sales gains, the company said.

"With fuel prices rising at the pump, history shows consumers will begin migrating from trucks to cars in 2011," Mondragon said. "With our strong focus on fuel-efficient cars, Ford can take advantage of this shift in buying behaviour.”

Mr. Mondragon has said he expects Ford’s Fiesta and all-new Focus to drive those sales in the important compact and sub-compact segments in 2011.

Hyundai Auto Canada Corp. also announced Tuesday it had its best year of sales on record in 2010, with 118,507 vehicles sold across the country, up nearly 15% from 2009.

During the month of December, Hyundai sold 6,104 units, an increase of 18.4% over the same month in 2009.

The rest of the automakers are expected to release their sales figures later Tuesday.

Hyundai Motor America Reports December Sales and Sets a Full-Year Sales Record

http://www.prnewswire.com/news-relea...112880234.html
Record 2010 sales of 538,228 up 24 percent, shatters prior record

- December sales up 33 percent in total, 54 percent at retail

- Sonata retail volume grows 90,349 (113 percent) - greatest in the industry

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., Jan. 4, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Hyundai Motor America today announced December sales of 44,802 units, up 33 percent versus 2009. For the full year, Hyundai reported 538,228 sales, up 103,164 units from last year for a 24 percent gain and an all-time Hyundai sales and market share record for the year.

(Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20091001/HYUNDAILOGO)

December retail sales were up 54 percent from last year due to improving product availability and a popular Hyundai Holiday marketing effort that helped increase traffic to Hyundai.com 120 percent over last year. Full year retail sales were up 35 percent. Fleet sales mix for the month of December was 7 percent, with fleet mix for the year at 16 percent.

"December was the capstone to a good year for Hyundai, with our total sales results actually understating the more important gains we made at retail, where we added a full point of market share," said John Krafcik, president and CEO, Hyundai Motor America. "While we grew total volume 24 percent, retail volume through our 800-strong dealer network climbed 35 percent, or 115,786 units, with 90,349 of that retail gain coming from the game-changing 2011 Sonata."

"That marks the biggest retail sales increase of any car in the entire industry, and it shows how well consumers have responded to our high-tech 4-cylinder lineup, dynamic new design, and the mid-size segment's first 5-star 2011 NHTSA crash test result," Krafcik added. "Improving Sonata Turbo availability, and the lithium-polymer battery-powered Sonata Hybrid that arrives later this month, should help Sonata find a few more buyers in 2011."

Elantra, Sonata, and Tucson sales for December increased 127 percent, 52 percent, and 348 percent, respectively. The all-new 2011 Elantra, which achieves 40 miles per gallon in every variant, not just low-volume, extra-charge "Eco" or "Special Fuel Economy" models, found 4,724 homes in its first full month of availability. Hyundai has targeted leadership in sales of 40 mile-per-gallon vehicles in 2011, and closes the books in 2010 with 4,916 sales in this category.

Genesis continued its impressive growth with the 18th consecutive month of year-over-year sales increases. For the year, Genesis sales increased 33 percent, to 29,122. "The continued growth in Genesis sales shows how much the Hyundai brand has grown over the last two years," said John Krafcik. "Genesis market share has now exceeded our most optimistic early projections, and has set the stage well for continued growth in premium segments." Hyundai's all-new flagship Equus, with higher residual value than Mercedes-Benz S-Class, BMW 7-Series, and Audi A8, began hitting showrooms in December to high demand and limited availability, resulting in 196 sales. Hyundai targets Equus sales volume of 2,000 to 3,000 in 2011.
