Post Report: Abu Dhabi using color-coded road surfaces to convey speed limits

Good idea to me.

Abu Dhabi has updated the speed limits for certain roads in and around the city and to make sure everyone knows about the new limits, as well as to warn drivers that they've entered one of these changed sections, officials have come up with a unique solution – painting the speed limit on the road.

On select sections of road, bright red asphalt will serve as a warning that the speed limit has changed. The thinking: A driver might miss a sign on the side of the road but they (hopefully) won't miss the entire road.

Interesting idea.

Just as long as upkeep and maintenance isn't expensive, it should help promote awareness.

i thought the idea of having black (or similar) color for the road is to reduce eye strain?

That wouldn't work any better in Michigan. When snow and ice covers the roads and obscures the speed limit and color, 4WD pickup owners will just have another excuse for driving too fast for conditions.

How about just have no speed limit on the highway Saves them from having to repaint constantly.

Interesting idea, not sure if it's a good one though. The point of a dark/black road is indeed to reduce eye strain. With such color changes on the road while driving, it could actually become a distraction for drivers.

Furthermore, what about sandstorms? Wouldn't those obscure the painted road in some situations?
