Rumor has it this North American Passat sits on the Jetta platform. That could probably be a big way they cut costs compared to the previous "premium" Passat North America got which was the Euro version.

I actually like this new design. Although it's very conservative and risk-free, it manages to look handsome and even elegant. It's not like the current or past Passat generations have been anything exciting in terms of design, IMO.
The cabin does look very high-end, though. I wouldn't mind spending some time in there!

Problem with VWs new USDM Jetta and USDM Passat is that they took out the feel of perceived quality out of them, so you are left with VW brand and all of its reliability issues, but without its high quality interiors. So they basically try to emulate Toyota here, but without quality reputation in the USA.
They want 1 million Passat sales in 7 years, so basically 130-150k per year, which is 7x increase... I am not sure if they will be able to get that, competition is quite tough in that market.

yeah, those full plastic doors look really high quality. I also wonder if, like Jetta, dashboard will be all hard plastics...
