Review: 2011 Toyota Highlander
#16
I'm the proud owner of one as of New Year's Day. With the ridiculously high price of used ones, it made perfect sense to buy brand new and get the 50/50 split 3rd row new for 2011. I'm very impressed by the 2GR-FE, even with the 5-speed. The thing can pull!

Note: The new JGC Penstar V6 has only a 5 speed, but most expect a new tranny soon.

I test drove this Highlander and the Pilot a couple of months ago when I was shopping for car. The Highlander is leaps and bounds better looking inside and out. HOWEVER, IMO the Pilot drove a lot better than the Highlander. The Pilot felt a lot more connected to the road and overall a nicer CUV to drive daily.

The transmission issue is a big one. Other companies, including Lexus for that matter have been quick to adopt transmissions with more gears. Thus, this is a surprise that a giant like Toyota wouldn't equip the V6 with a 6 speed however, Yaris, Corolla, and Matrix still have 4 speeds. Nevertheless, Toyota can remain competitive.

I have a 2010 Highlander and I love it. The interior quality is pretty good for a Toyota. It's not Lexus quality, but I didn't want to pay for Lexus quality (that's what my IS is for!), so it's perfect. I haven't decided if I care so much for the refresh, I think I prefer the 2008-2010 exterior, but it may grow on me. I am, however, super envious of the 50/50 split 3rd row seat!
