not sure about the character line towards the rear of the car. it does look like a dent in some lighting conditions.
maybe they did that because mercedes has a compound character line on the E class.
If this will be slotted under the genesis, I'd rather buy a genesis for a couple thousand more.
but it looks like a solid product for a fwd platform.
i like the rear end. looks aston martinish, like a cross between the one-77 and the regular astons
much better looking than the Avalon at least.

they did a pretty good job with the overall proportions...

It's certainly possible that Hyundai probably tried to go for an Aston rear end look, but the resemblance is quite distant IMO. The rear more than anything looks like a 7th-gen Mitsubishi Galant. The resemblance with the Galant rear is very similar. In fact, one could say the Azera rear looks like a redesigned Galant.

wow looks nice, I just wish they made the front end look stronger and longer. they rake up the windshield pillar so high and slanted that it makes the fender hood portion look short.
anyhow if the sonata starts at 20k and genesis sedan starts at 30k then the azera should be in the 25k range not bad for a car that looks like it's 40k.

looks like they stole a few cues from aston martin.
look at that rear quarter window upward inflection, and the tail lights.
or maybe aston stole Hyundai's top secret designs....... NOOOhh. say it aint so....

I love it. Blows the Avalon away in terms of overall design. That's for sure.

The middle stretch in the hatch area has the same shape for both cars.
Further,

The shape of the light assembly as well as element arrangement in the trunk area is extremely similar for both cars. The only actual difference is that the white reverse light is positioned a bit more in the middle in the Azera compared to the Galant, and extends a bit more towards the middle than on the Galant. That and the rear light assembly on the body (the blacked out parts) of the Azera has an upward shape as opposed to a downward shape on the Galant.
So in conclusion, yes they ARE similar. I find it hard to believe how someone would not consider them to be similar.
To clarify:

maybe mitsubishi can license and sell the new Azera as the "Gallant: Ray Charles Edition"

besides the lights on the rear though, they're hugely different, with the bumper on azera tightly integrated into the body flow versus sticking way the heck out with lines and bumps all over, and how about how the azera rear window is really sloped making it look like a hatch (maybe it is?) and the gallant has a more conventional trunk.

Even if the new Azera's tails use a similar idea, it's clearly not a copycat move. Do we think Hyundai went back to 1992 to copy a design? ![Uhh...](https://www.clublexus.com/forums/images/smilies/1387914497.gif)
Numerous cars have used this cross-linked design in the tail lights.
Here's a few quick examples of the same theme...
