January U.S. sales seen as ‘good sign' for 2011 growth

Read more: http://www.autonews.com/apps/pbcs.dl...#ixzz1BjFOB1Oe

U.S. auto sales in January are on track to outpace those from a year earlier, with retail sales overcoming a slight drop in fleet demand, J.D. Power and Associates said today.

“Typically January is a weak month because of the push to end the year on a high note, but the volume and selling rate has been slightly higher than average,” said Jeff Schuster, executive director of global forecasting.

“It's a good signal for where the year is going.”

Citing a slow but steady recovery in the U.S. economy, J.D. Power increased its forecast for retail sales this year to 10.5 million units, up from a previous estimate of 10.4 million. It also boosted its estimate for total vehicle sales to 13 million units, up from 12.8 million.

That would mark a 12 percent increase from last year's 11.6 million. That total reflected an 11 percent rise from the industry's 27-year low in 2009.

New light-vehicle retail sales will jump to 632,100 units, 23 percent higher than the same period last year, the market research firm said. January's seasonally adjusted annualized selling rate should reach 10 million units, almost 2 million units above January of last year but down from a 10.9 million retail SAAR in December, the company said.

Total vehicle sales will reach 794,500 units this month, up 14 percent from a year earlier, J.D. Power said. Fleet sales will account for 20 percent of that total.

“Last January's sales were driven by a replenishment of fleets, which were greatly depleted in 2009,” Schuster said.

In 2010, fleet sales represented 21 percent of all light-vehicle demand, he said.

J.D. Power said it expects North American vehicle production to rise 7 percent to 12.6 million vehicles in 2011.

The firm based its estimates on transaction data from more than 8,900 U.S. retail franchisees during the first 11 selling days of the month.

Edmunds.com CEO Jeremy Anwyl also released his sales estimates for January this week on his blog, Just to Clarify.

He expects retail sales of 702,000 units in January, or a SAAR of 10.6 million. He put overall January light-vehicle sales at 846,000 units, for a SAAR of 12.7 million. That would be the fourth straight month above 12 million.

Anwyl expects 17 percent of sales to come from fleet deliveries, down from a year earlier when fleet vehicles accounted for one-quarter of all sales.

“Last January saw unusual levels for restocking and possibly local governments ordering new fleet vehicles with stimulus dollars. So I don't think 25 [percent] is something we will repeat anytime soon,” Anwyl wrote. “But 17 [percent] seems low, as fleet sales are typically front loaded with a new year.”
Won't stick yet but will start the thread for this month.

Ford’s Balanced Porfolio of Cars, Utilities, Trucks Delivered 27 Percent Increase in January Retail Sales

DEARBORN, Mich, Feb. 1, 2011 /PRNewswire/ --

* Ford’s January retail sales climbed 27 percent versus year ago – the largest retail sales increase to begin a year in more than a decade; retail sales were up 35 percent for cars, 22 percent for utilities and 24 percent for trucks
* Ford’s total January sales (including fleet sales) were 127,317, up 13 percent, including a planned 27 percent decline in sales to daily rental companies
* Fresh off record-setting years, Fusion, Escape set January sales records
* 2011 Explorer, North American Truck of the Year, is Ford’s fastest-turning vehicle; Explorer retail sales more than triple year-ago levels
* Ford’s F-Series truck registers 30 percent sales increase

Consumer demand for Ford’s full family of cars, utilities and trucks continued to grow in January, as retail sales climbed 27 percent versus a year ago. Retail sales for cars grew 35 percent, 22 percent for utilities and 24 percent for trucks.

Ford’s total sales in January (including sales to fleet customers) were 127,317, up 13 percent. Total sales comparisons included a planned 27 percent decline in sales to daily rental companies and the discontinuation of the Mercury brand.

“We begin 2011 in a strong position – ready to meet the needs of a wide range of customers with a full portfolio of high-quality, fuel-efficient vehicles,” said Ken Czubay, Ford vice president, U.S. Marketing, Sales and Service. “We’re off to a great start in 2011 with the largest January retail sales increase in more than a decade.”

Cars

Fiesta posted January sales of 4,270. In 2010, Fiesta played a key role in helping Ford to achieve its highest retail share in California since 2006. The Los Angeles region continues to be the top-selling region for Ford’s smallest new car.

Focus retail sales increased 41 percent. The Focus and Fiesta combined to boost the company’s small car retail sales to a level almost double a year ago (up 99 percent). The all-new Focus arrives in dealerships this spring.

“Higher gasoline prices are factoring into vehicle purchase decisions,” said Czubay. “Ford Motor Company is leading the way for consumers with the best or among the best fuel economy with every new vehicle we introduce. We also have four vehicles with 40 mpg or higher fuel economy – Fiesta, Focus, Fusion Hybrid and Lincoln MKZ Hybrid – more than any other automaker.”

Fusion – Ford’s popular midsize sedan – set a January sales record of 14,346, up 18 percent. Fusion retail sales were up 39 percent. In 2010, Fusion set a full year sales record of 219,219 – the first time since 2004 a Ford car has eclipsed the 200,000 milestone.

Ford Mustang retail sales were up 17 percent, and Lincoln MKZ retail sales increased 42 percent. In January, the new MKZ Hybrid accounted for 24 percent of MKZ retail sales – the highest since it was introduced in October.

Utilities

In January, the all-new 2011 Explorer was the fastest-turning Ford vehicle on the showroom floor. Recently named North American Truck of the Year, the 2011 Explorer offers customers full SUV capability with superior ride and handling, plus class-leading fuel economy. Explorer sales totaled 7,351, up 73 percent. Retail sales were more than triple year-ago levels (up 244 percent).

Ford Escape set a January record with total sales of 13,973, up 30 percent versus a year ago. In 2010, Escape set a full-year sales record of 191,026.

The redesigned 2011 Ford Edge posted a 36 percent increase in retail sales.

Trucks

Ford F-Series checked in with January sales of 35,806, up 30 percent. In 2010, F-Series sales totaled 528,349, up 28 percent versus 2009. In the commercial fleet market, where Ford’s ‘Built Tough’ reputation is put to the test every day, F-Series outsells its nearest competitor by almost 2-to-1 based on 2010 November calendar-year-to-date registrations. F-Series has been the best-selling truck in America for 34 years in a row and the best-selling vehicle, car or truck, for 29 straight years.

Ford’s Econoline and Transit Connect vans captured more than 60 percent of the commercial van market in 2010. In January, Econoline sales totaled 7,979, up 29 percent versus a year ago. Transit Connect sales totaled 2,072, up 78 percent.

Ford had six of the top eight vehicles registered to commercial fleet customers in 2010 and an industry-leading 38 percent share of the commercial fleet market, based on November calendar-year-to-date registrations.

“In addition to industry-leading quality and fuel efficiency, our broad range of products offer fleet customers strong resale values,” said Czubay. “Resale value is a key factor in reducing vehicle operating costs, which puts Ford in a strong position as businesses continue to replace or add to their vehicle fleets.”

Subaru of America, Inc. Reports Record January 2011 Sales

--Sales continue to climb in fourth calendar year of growth --

-- up 21% year-over-year--

CHERRY HILL, N.J., Feb. 1, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- On the back of record-breaking sales in 2010, Subaru of America, Inc. today reported a continued upward swing for the Subaru brand by posting record January sales of 18,858, up 21% versus January 2010.
(Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20080325/SUBARULOGO )
The company finished 2010 as a top 10 sales brand, and the only manufacturer to show a sales increase for three straight years. As in 2010, Legacy, Outback and Forester models led the January sales increases.
Now firmly established as a 2% plus market share brand, Subaru products continue to demonstrate their suitability for today's market, and with its innovative cut-through-the-clutter Marketing programs such as the upcoming "Super Sunday Dog Walk" where Subaru invites dog owners to get some exercise at half-time, awards for safety from the IIHS, resale values from KBB and residual values from ALG, the brand is clearly in a healthy position.

"2011 promises to be another great year for the Subaru brand," said Timothy M. Colbeck, senior vice president of sales, Subaru of America, Inc. "Our strong performance is carrying through from 2010 and with new product coming in 2011, we are well placed to set yet another sales record this year."
Thomas J. Doll, executive vice president and COO, Subaru of America, Inc said; "We are pleased to be beginning 2011 as we finished 2010, by setting records. This is not only the 11th month in a row where our franchise has set a new monthly sales record, but also exceeded our January 2010 sales by 21%. Our franchise continues to be on a roll."

Audi............

[source: Audi of America]

Audi today reported January U.S. sales of 7,812 Audi cars and SUVs, which accounted for a 20% overall increase from January 2010. The previous January sales record for Audi in the U.S. was the 6,510 vehicles sold in 2010.

The strong January 2011 results followed the best year that the luxury brand has seen in the U.S. as sales surpassed 100,000 for the first time to finish the full year at 101,629 vehicles. The 8.6% share that Audi held in overall U.S. imported luxury vehicle sales at the end of 2010 also set a record for the brand.

Audi models have already earned significant awards in the U.S., including the Edmunds.com Technology Breakthrough Award to the 2011 Audi A8, four category winners in the Strategic Vision 2010 Total Value Index and the EyesOn Design “Best Production Vehicle” awarded to the Audi A6, which is scheduled to arrive this Fall.

In January 2011, Audi recorded year-over-year sales increases exceeding 50% with five of its models: the Audi A3, Audi A8, Audi Q5, Audi Q7 and the Audi R8.

Sales of the 2011 Audi A8 flagship model, introduced in late November, jumped 765.4% from a year earlier as consumers continue to respond favorably to the most technologically advanced vehicle Audi has ever produced.

January 2011 Audi A3 sales climbed 52.8% from a year earlier as consumers continued to demand the Audi A3 TDI clean diesel model, the 2010 Green Car of the Year. Audi Q5 crossover sales continued to show the strong momentum built throughout 2010 by posting a 50.9% gain from January 2010 sales. The Audi Q7 full-size luxury crossover sales also showed a nearly 60% rise from January 2010.

“Consumers sent a strong signal that Audi is a brand on the rise,” said Audi of America President Johan de Nysschen. “Our intent is to make 2011 another pacesetting year.”

I haven't seen Lexus that low in years.

Lexus now has very old product even with the IS refresh and I think BMW or even Benz has a chance of being #1 in sales in 2011.
IS/ES/GS/LS are all very old now and on the way out. The new GS will debut next spring and the others all around it. Minimal GSs were ordered for 2011. 450h and 460 are special order only.
We know the HS has flopped and Lexus is getting rid of 2010 inventory. 2011s have not arrived yet. Ironically demand is up as gas prices are climbing, dealers are really pissed at the continued handling of this car.

The CT is very low volume, a 12k a year sales goal and arrives in March so it won't bump sales at all.

The recalls need to end, it is not good press at all.

Going to be a very challenging year for them as their perfect storm is still brewing.

Oh and 4 LFAs were counted as sales

Yep...redesigning all four sedans within two years might not have been the best idea for Lexus. It was very exciting at the time but here we are now and everything is 4-5 years old and there is no new product waiting in the pipeline. GX and LX are low volume but did create a nice uptick at their introductions. Sales of both will undoubtedly slow down this year. RX is well into it's lifecycle and won't see a refresh or update for a year and a half. HS is a lost cause and the SC is dead.

Suddenly, the CT is looking like Lexus' only ace in the hole and that is a long shot. The only other wild card is whether or not the new ES will arrive later this year with the new Camry. That could be a game changer, but nobody knows.

It's going to be a loooong two years in Lexus Land and I'm sure dealers are unhappy about it. Putting off the GS until MY2013 was a very bad idea IMO.
