I'd probably go crazy if I saw my car like that. I love my car too much.

Just imagine calling into work, "Ya, I can't make it... my car is a block of ice"

Marshall, what do you mean by, not overdone ? I didn't know there's a risk of the defrosters cracking the windows with the snow & ice we get up here?? I normally start the car and turn on both front and rear defrosters and let them do their job. Should I not let them run for their full duration?

I think its best to scrape the ice first then use your defroster to minimize the risks.

I've heard of situations where it was so cold just merely turning on the car's heater (no ice or snow on the glass) shattered the windows.

Yeah I read it on the Aston Martin forums (figures), someone's DB9 rear windshield shattered as soon as he turned on the defroster. Partially attributed to the quality of the glass and installation, but still possible to happen to other people.

What you have to know is that the glass is held in there pretty tight, and it flexes as the car flexes or subjected to heat and cold. When it's covered in ice, the lack of flex room will shatter it if you are unlucky.

I find this hard to believe. If the vehicle is that cold to begin with turning on the defroster is not going automatically generate significant heat. If this were the case we'd be shattering windows left, right and center up here as we go through extreme temperature changes and extreme cold.

More likely is that it was a poor windshield or their were existing flaws or chips that compromised the integrity of the glass.

Don't use hot water. Just pee on it. That won't crack the glass and you get to release yourself in the process.
