From personal experience:

We had a 2001 BMW X5 4.4i fully loaded (Sport package / nav)...etc

Pro:
-Solid car, feels like a tank
-Quick for an SUV,
-Handles well for an SUV, really fun to drive and had a blast throwing it around (when it worked)
-Still get respect even in 2009

Con:
-Most unreliable care we have ever owned (felt like there was always an impending dash light if there were not any on)
-We spent nearly 10k in maintanence after warranty was over (power steering fail, air suspension fail, alternator fail, xyz tranny problems, nav screen pixels died...)
-TERRIBLE depreciation...we paid 65k in 2001 and sold for 8k in 2009 (no accidents / 100k miles / no damage /funtioning fine the dealership said it was impossible to sell given reliability issues--don't blame them)

Though I admit this as well as current X5 is the most attractive / fun to drive SUV, I would NOT advise purchasing this car outside of warranty or if you're worried about a budget...after all its a German car made in the US so cost of parts are high and its poorly made...

My cousin's wife had one and something literally broke on a monthly basis. It ran out of warranty and they sold it for well below KBB, $12 or 13k IIRC, just to get rid of it. It had all of its regular maintenance and was not beaten on at all; she got it brand new. When they got married during her dad's toast he handed my cousin a roll of duct tape and a wrench and said something along the lines of, "the BMW she drives goes with her, goodluck!"

OLT, have you looked at a Cayenne?
Those seem more reliable than the x5.

There are plenty of stats to support their lack of reliability.
Exactly. A lot of people keep saying that which doesn't make sense. If it's unreliable, it'll break down regardless of the maintenance. Especially on electrical or other mechanical parts where it doesn't require maintenance, how are you suppose to "maintain" it?

Cayenne is boring to me. I drove the X5 and had it inspected. At it's mileage I suspect it is one of the good ones so I'm doing the paperwork on it. Thanks for the info guys.

My best friend has a 2006? x5 4.4 and its amazing. I drive it very often and it can handle some abuse. At high speeds its still ridiculously solid, even at speeds 100 and above. Reliability wise he hasn't had a problem. Thing is rims make a huge difference on this car, i don't think this car had the same rims as the v6, but make sure to get one with at least 18's. For the amount of abuse and jack rabbit starts and high speed runs we've done in it, i still runs like it did when he got it

Congrats and good luck!

The color combo of the interior looks really good...one of the better looks I've seen on the E53.

Thank ya. The red plate is a dealer tag.

I have had MANY BMW so I'm not scared of it.

I gotta get some leather cleaner in the morning and get to work detailing it.

Negative. From FORD to TATA and nothing in between..... where is a stable parent company? Next year I'd probably had to get parts for it from Hyundai. I happen to have driven a buddies today and bumped this because not only did the X5 look better (subjective) it drove a LOT better.
