True, but you have to remember that MB has already replaced the W211 E63 with a brand new model...of course that kills the resale value of the outgoing model. When the new 5.5 AMG engine is available on the 2012 E63, I can only assume values will drop even further.

Bottom line is that the best buy for an AMG or M is finding a slightly used CPO model. Let someone else take the depreciation hit.

Not 3 year old or 4 year old ones like the AMG's we're talking about. Autotrader only has 32 listed that are 2008 or newer. Mostly in the $70K range with decent mileage. For $115K car that's still 60% vs the 40% of the AMG's.

It's not even close how badly MB depreciates. With our experience with the ML it still scares me a little to think what we'd be getting into. Is the deep discount enough to justify the possible maintenance costs?
i personally think it's somewhat hit and miss, just like bmw (though maybe more problems). i know people with mb going into shops all the time, and i know people with e55 pushing 600whp and it has no problem

who wants to buy that? not many! the above plus the complexity, huge cost of repairs, and 'not new' make it less desirable.
the only thing worse than buying a used high end benz is buying any used jag.
umm i think you need to spend more time looking at these used cars. i have seen more than a few amg (55, 63, 65) cars and they are in extremely pristine condition it's not even funny. i don't see any indication that most of these cars are driven like crap more than that of say bmw m.

everything is in perspective. plenty of people think it's nuts to spend 50k on a "luxury" car when a 20k car does 90% of the job just fine. i am sure the expensive market shrink fast, that's just the nature. and i am a believer that people should get stuff they can truly afford. but what i am trying to bring out is the "incredible" depreciation on mb particular the amg cars.

but yeah, talk about depreciation. It just goes to show that not even super/exotics are immune to it.
hahaha of course it's stupid to think exotics mean low or no depreciation. given the market now, most supercars and exotics are seeing bad depreciation one way or another. look at scuderia and some other cars in the same league and everyone can see the slump just as much

People that are buying these cars new are typically not the same type that would buy something used and the amount of people that can afford the car drops off dramatically once you remove the handful that are buying new.

There is a much greater market for cars in the 40-80k car range in terms of those that can afford them, kind of.... Say you’re looking at a 150k car new and is listed at 120k 2 years old, if you can afford 120k then you just pay 150k and get it with the new warranty so that math does not work.

These cars have to rapidly depreciate until they hit the edge of the market where there is a larger group of people to afford the car.

Not only that, if you can only afford the car used at 2-3 years old chances are the maintenance is more then you can afford too which drives the price of these cars down even faster.
i think you hit some great points JP. people getting these cars new, in a lot of cases from what i see, they are really rich and they don't feel much about the hit they are taking. a lot of them selling their 63 or 65, they actually have some other 63 or 65 in the garage, and they are literally replacing their 3-4 yr old amg with another one. so that means they dump 150k on a car, 3-4 yrs later sell it for 50k, not feel anything, and no problem putting another 150k on another one. it's incredible...

on the used market, that could be the case too. though i can't find solid information on avg how bad it is to maintain a 3-4 yr old amg with extended warranty outside of the normal maintenance (which isn't that much more than lexus in general)

yes, i thought it's about the new model, but that doesn't take away the fact that amg in general slump super fast though. i thought the previous e55/63 was because of the new one, but when i looked at the s63 i also noticed the same trend.

true, i think the overall depreciation on lexus (even the 600hl) is noticeably better than mb, and more so when compared to amg. like i said, the lx570 is one incredible example

hahhaaa i don't care if they have a r65 (v12 bi-turbo), no way i am getting that car.

i have to say the s63 is pretty tempting though like i said we are somewhat leaning toward a bigger suv

The cheapest one within 500 miles of Chicago is a 2008 with 35k miles for $65k. Don't know what you're talking about.

Car is not selling so great at the auctions either. National average is $65,325 so I think the seller is going to have a hard time selling for the asking price.

typical. applies to any mass produced car.

after 3 years, any of them will lose half their value.

40% left after 4 years is reasonable.

a 4 year old lexus won't sell for more than ~40% of new price either.
