IIRC, my 02 Avalanche RWD used to average about 17 MPG with 80% freeway driving. I suspect 4WD will drop that about 1-2 MPG, more if you do more city driving. The 2500 version is also likely to get lower MPG as it is heavier and likely to have taller gears.

For other references, my 04 Sierra Denali AWD averaged 14.5 MPG. 99 GMC Sierra 1500 RWD averaged 18 MPG. 97 Ford Expedition averaged 14 MPG.

How about a Montero? They should be pretty cheap.

Another vote for the 4Runner. That thing can take a beating and last. We had a '95 in our family, lasted 200k miles on nothing but regular servicing and oil changes. Finally sold it to a mechanic after the headgasket started going bad - we could have kept it longer im sure but we didn't need it anymore either and this was when gas was $4 a gal in SoCal

Long response but I own a 2000 4Runner Limited 4WD so I can tell you what I think about it as a first hand owner.....I bought it 2 years ago as a winter vehicle to keep my F out of the nasty 4-5 mos of the year. It had 111K when I bought it and I paid 8K then which I thought was a pretty good price for a Limited...so they are out there. sr5's can be had cheaper...I put new tires on it...changed oil...that's it....121K now

The telescoping antenna goes up every time you turn on the radio (or start the vehicle if you leave radio on) and goes down when you turn radio off or turn the car off....so, it feels like that thing goes up and down all the time to me....I keep waiting for it to break.,...I keep saying to myself, that is not a good design, that little motor is going to die, the damn thing is gonna get stuck down in there and I won't be able to fish it out, it will rust down in there, blah blah....and you know what....it hasn't (I did put some lithium grease on it this year)....11 yrs old and has never been replaced as far as I know...actually, EVERYTHING works like it should...all the buttons function, the sunroof works and doesn't leak, etc. I share this to give a glimpse into Toyotas when Toyotas were real quality IMO....they seem to be using cheaper materials now, etc. but I digress....

One downside...dog slow v6 with so-so mpg...around 16-17mpg...I prob. should've bought the next model ('03 and up I think) with a v8. I feel like I need to Fred Flinstone it sometimes to get it going.
