Maybe I'm going crazy but I noticed for the first time that premium is now 40 cents more than regular instead of around 20 cents more.

FOr example it usually was $2.99/$3.09/$3.19

I noticed at one place it was $2.99/$3.19/$3.39

In northern CA, they are (consistently) sticking to the 20cents uplift for premium.

It's probably a marketing ploy to get those that overbuy gas (putting premium in cars that are made to run on regular) to continue to overbuy grade of gas. Usually when gas price spikes hit, the sales of premium fuel drops significantly, probably because those that really don't need more than the regular grade (based on auto mfg fuel requirements), start using regular.

The norm around here is 10 cents more for mid, 20 cents more for prem over reg

few places have went 30-40 cents over reg for prem, that trend is increasing

You're not really disagreeing with me. I recommended Shell and Chevron as probably the top two gas brands in America. I use Shell myself most of the time.......both because of my Shell discount-cards and because Chevron stations, in my area, are not plentiful (a couple of them converted to the cut-rate Liberty brand).

I paid $4.09/gallon for 91 octane gas @ a Chevron in the 951 today

Gas prices sure did creep up pretty fast!

IS-SV makes a good point. Many people who get premium will only get premium, no matter how much the price jumps from the regular and mid grades. Gas stations can put whatever price they want, and they're generally competitive if they're close to one another. A little experiment to see if the demand of premium gas will still remain as high if the price for it increases more so than the typical ten cents. Personally, I'll roam around town looking for the best premium gas than go for the convenient station close to home. It might not be a lot saved, but any little bit helps right now.

Florida still also has a 20 cent difference between regular and premium. In North Atlanta area, the spread has been 30 cents for a long time now.

scary to think about it, but what is going to happen when and if the dollar loses its position as the international currency. God help us when / if this happens. Gas could jump to $6 a gallon over night. Its scary to even think about it

It's going to happen, I'd bet money on it, but what would that be worth?
