Wondering if this thing actually has any chance against the IS-F, 3 series, C-class. The CTS-V seemed to do ok against its european/japanese opponents so maybe the ATS will have a shot

I think this ATS is a great move for Cadillac. I remember reading about this car a few months ago and it said it will have a strong family resemblance to the CTS and offer both RWD and AWD.
Car makes sense to me since the CTS has grown in size to the point where they really need (at least size wise) a direct competitor for the IS, 3 series and similar. Unfortunately I also remember reading that this car is still at least a year away from production, but I could be mistaken.

Here's the latest stats between similar competitors:
3-Series: 4,672
C-class: 4,479
A4+A5: 3,912
CTS: 6,033

^ I have same concerns, and the latest CR reliability data for both GM cars and GM SUV's backs up the concern and shows nearly all GM products to be subpar against the benchmarks (Toyota/Lexus, Honda/Acura, Subaru).
Not to mention that I don't care for Caddy car styling efforts, with Escalade-derived non-aerodynamic boxy/edgy styling. Time to move-on in the styling department at Caddy and maybe the ATS will be step forward for a change.
The CTS sales at 6K/month must be a record, probably involved record incentives and discounts too in order to move that much metal.

If they include the eggcrate grille, hard-edge bumpers, and vertical taillight (fins), I'm not interested. This is a stale, tired, and old look from the 70's that needs to die already.
