BMW vs. Mercedes Benz (poll time!!)
If you had to choose only between Mercedes or BMW, which would it be? I don't care why, year, or model, doesn't make any difference. I am currently in a dispute with a friend that thinks Mercedes is a better car than BMW, and i think the opposite. And being a Lexus forum, there is no bais between the two.
Thanks for your input,
Steven
Ninja Edit: I meant to ask, if you had to choose between the two, regardless of reason, which would you choose?

I would have to agree with your friend, I like MB better just because of their innovative technology they put in there cars. Such as the the new E class having the stopping technology if the driver isnt paying attention. Plus I love thier styling for the most part.

MB and BMW are both are fantastic brands but really appeal to different buyers. MB = luxury, while BMW = sport luxury.
Gets even more difficult to choose when comparing the M and AMG divisions. It's honestly a coin-flip for me.

MB is way more luxurious than BMW.
However the lower end model BMW are better than MB, but as you go up, MB absolutely destroys BMW IMO.
Ex: i would choose the m3 over the c63 any day, but I think the e63 is gorgeous compared to the m5, and the 7 series is one of the ugliest car I have ever seen when compared to the S class. Also the m6 is nothing compared to Cl65. The SL is in a league of its own

My pick would be MB because of the depth of their lineup. I think discussions are very close in regards to the 3 series vs. C class, 5 vs. E, and X vs. ML. Once you get to the 6 vs. CL/SL and 7 vs. S class, I think the gap widens considerably. BMW doesn't have a SLR or SLS on top of that and doesn't carry the same prestige as Benz.
That being said, the price point of the upper echelon Benz's is far higher than the top BMW's and this helps keep the desirability high, imo.

Agreed, if luxury is the priority, MB is the choice. And I'm not just talking about superficial and subjective interior finish differences. Comfort, supportive seats, ease of use in terms of controls and luxury features, chassis/structural stiffness, roominess, stability at speed on less than perfect roads, safety, quietness are several of the attributes that MB excels.
All the tier 1 premium cars are above average in terms of luxury.

Woah woah woah.
If you want to talk about cramming twin turbo engines with gobs of torque into rocket ships, then sure AMG wins that one.
But if you want to talk about building a car that is useful for going in more than 1 direction, there is no competition between AMG and M.
In fact, you can't truly compare the two because their goals are so different.

^^ well yes, but how many of us go to the track.? <cricket noise> Even if we do a little street racing on the side, its usually straight line and for that AMG ftw. lol
I would have to say MB overall. I have no desire to own a bmw (never have, dont think I ever will as long as Mercedes and Lexus are here). I dislike their interior design, their exterior design theme (though this is getting better), and the way they nickel and dime you.
I think MB wins on design, luxury, prestige, and overall class.
