Efficient Dynamic is banner for different technologies that ... make car more efficient :-).
One of those is alternator being disconnected when not needed, and then connected again during braking. It isnt brake energy recovery like in hybrids (and thats also not needed for 12v battery of course).

Until now, braking meant losing energy. Brake Energy Regeneration puts an end to this by winning energy back during braking to charge the battery.
As soon as the driver takes their foot off the accelerator the generator is engaged and converts excess kinetic energy into electrical energy. Once the battery is fully charged, the generator is disengaged from the engine. This unburdens the engine and reduces emissions. Fuel consumption savings means that there is more power available for acceleration.

I drove an F10 535 loaner for a couple days, and it was nice. It was pretty quick for being such a large car, but I don't think I would categorize the driving experience as fun. Luxurious, quiet, and composed? Yes. The idrive system is better but still sucks, and the interior was very well designed. But it's size precludes it from being a sporty drive without the M treatment. It looks about the same size as the W220 S Class...

yeah... alternator = generator here, notice how they mention how it is "disengaged" from the engine.
It is just stupid PR... having electric motor to get brake regen for tiny 12v batter would be beyond useless. So nobody is losing anything, it is just funny that they worded it that way :-).

Wait, what kind of mileage are you getting in your X5d?
Keep in mind that any new car with only a few hundred kilometers has a ways to go before getting through the break in period. Mileage is always less than ideal.
