Rumormill: 2012 BMW M5 to get manual tranny in U.S.
Rumormill: 2012 BMW M5 to get manual tranny in U.S.
Contradictory to earlier rumblings, the upcoming F10 BMW M5 will reportedly be available with the option of a traditional manual transmission here in the United States. As with the E60 M5, we'd expect the stick-shift-equipped F10 to be slower than its automated sister, but we doubt it will amount to anything noticeable. Buyers will still be able to opt for the seven-speed dual-clutch transmission here in the States, if they so desire.
There's one option, however, that BMW won't be offering in our market. In Germany, buyers can opt to have the car's top speed raised to 189 miles per hour, provided they agree to enter an M5-specific driver training program. This will likely be a costly option – in addition to the price of the training program, buyers will have to shell out for upgraded engine management software, as well as a set of ZR-rated tires.
I would truly lose respect for BMW if the M5 were not offered with a proper manual transmission, for the old fashioned folk out there. I was commenting today how I can't believe that the 528 isn't available with a MT anymore. I thought that a fair amount of people still bought BMWs with a stick.
You can't get the new 9-5 in a stick either, which amazes me, but perhaps that's because Saab lost their enthusiasts.
I was at a car show a few weeks ago and this new 5 series BMW was a manual transmission. I assumed the M5 had it too. I don't know the exact model of the BMW I saw though.
Everyone who wants an M5 in stick has no intentions of ever buying the car
um what? you do realize all e39 models came standard w/ 6spd? let alone most if not all previous generation of the M5 series, its only recently they started including the smg for the "S ome M ay G ripe" panzies....

you realize i have a m3 6mt and i am eying on the new m5?
i don't think anyone is denying that dct is faster than mt, but fast = everything? i rather have more driving feel and involvement. oh well, i am not going to engage in another similar debate

Your the exception then, no debate, long as you can order and get it, but the 2 dealers I know of, it took them forever to get rid of manual E60 M5, Im not even referring to performance
Most of the 550s I see are 6MT. What does that say? The true BMW enthusiast wants a stick and a V8 apparently. The autos and the I6s are for those who merely want a BMW.

oh, no doubt they are hard to get rid of. i think the dealership was stupid to order 6mt as inventory to begin with. it should be custom order
The question is are they just going to stick the manual tranny like they did with the E60 without really reworking everything to make it work? The 6MT in the E60 M5 was definitely a miss.
