Rumormill: BMW 3 Series GT could actually be new 4 Series

We've heard a few times that BMW is working on a 3 Series Gran Turismo, but a rumor floated at Germany's Auto Motor und Sport claims the GT may instead be an all-new 4 Series. If true, BMW Blog says that a 4 Series could be offered as a four-door coupe that would help BMW compete with offerings like the A5 Sportback. The move would also enable BMW to offer a more stylish vehicle that slots well below the 6 Series in price while still demanding a premium over the 3 Series. And keep in mind that BMW has already green-lit the 6 Series Gran Coupe, which will feature two-door styling and four physical doors when it arrives in 2012.

Given that Audi has feverishly expanded its lineup the past few years, we wouldn't blame BMW for countering with a 4 Series, but this is the first we've heard of it, so we'll keep this one squarely in the rumormill category for now.

Styling looks good, as anticipated. A nice balance of the 3 and 5 series. I like the look of that front end.

That's actually the Gran Coupe, which BMW indicated would be a rival to the Mercedes CLS.

Please don't make it a CUV like the pointless awkward looking 5 series GT. I have yet to see a single one on the road.

A low slung sedan based off of a 3 series sounds interesting and could be a hit. Just don't call a 4 door a "coupe".

Looks cool, but I hate the term "four door coupe." I'm still waiting for the upcoming two door sedan.....

I Don't think thats the pic of what they're referring to. Seen this pic awhile ago when talked about the CLS-rival 6 series. Anyway, I Dont think its a good idea imo. They have too many versions of too many series so far. And most of them dont sell(5 series GT). Why compete in a niche that dont make you money!!! Its a waste of resources that can be put into and develop models that you currently produce. Luxury car makers are losing their exclusiveness with all these one hit wonder, non selling, niche cars that dilute there, well "exclusiveness". BMW and Mercedes now compete with not only Lexus and Rolls, but now with Honda, Toyota, and now Hyundai. So soon we will see a Ford fiesta, Honda Fit, and a BMW ?-series competing in future issues of Car and Driver. I loved when Mercedes had only 3 lines(late 80's). They had plenty of bling, heritage, exclusiveness. Models like the C230 hatchback and the car mentioned in this thread only take away from that. Just my opinion tho.

I still don't know what is up with all these so called four door coupes which to me are simply sedans with rounder roofs and uglier trunks. They are just something less practical than sedans and less beautiful than true two door coupes but at higher prices. You just can not be a coupe when you have four doors, period.

Thanks for the info. I had heard about the BMW Gran Coupe a while ago but then it got real quiet. I know all the premium car makers are very aware of the impact the CLS has had, essentially a newly created niche (4 door coupe).

I like it, but then I like a lot of the fastback 4 door sedans including CLS, ISx50, IS-F, XF, Rapide to name a few.

The good thing about BMW is that I actually like them for having so many models/options for us to choose from. I'm not even fond of BMW but certain models like this 4 series and the 6 series lure me in because they're different than others.

Wish Lexus competed against the CLS directly.
