Hyundai Motor America today announced record March sales of 61,873 units, up 32 percent compared with the same period last year and up 42 percent over last month. For the year, total Hyundai sales are up 28 percent, with retail volume up 46 percent, representing an all-time record first-quarter performance. Sales to fleet accounts are down 31 percent for the year with fleet representing 13 percent of the total sales mix year-to-date and 11 percent for March.

"March was an unbelievably strong month for Hyundai," said Dave Zuchowski, Hyundai Motor America's executive vice president of national sales. "Consumer demand was comparable to our previous record-setting month, August 2009, when the high watermark for sales was set with the 'Cash for Clunkers' program. With our overall supply of fuel-efficient vehicles improving, and the recent launch of our breakthrough 40-mpg 2011 Elantra, we are poised to sustain our momentum into the strong spring selling season."

March's strong performance was led by the Alabama-produced Sonata and Elantra products that were up a combined 55 percent over March last year and accounted for 68 percent of total Hyundai volume.

Genesis' sustained growth trajectory continued with a 24 percent sales increase over last year, representing the 21st consecutive month of year-over-year sales increases. The all-new Equus premium flagship continues to outpace sales objectives, already garnering a six percent share of the premium luxury segment year-to-date.

IRVINE, Calif., April 1, 2011 -- Kia Motors America (KMA) today announced its best ever monthly sales of 44,179, a 44.7-percent increase from March 2010, and a 34.7-percent increase over last month. This marks KMA's seventh consecutive month of record sales, and for the first time in company history Kia had two vehicles -- Sorento and Soul -- post sales of more than 10,000 units in a single month. The record March total helped KMA achieve its best-ever quarterly sales result with 104,774 units sold, surpassing the previous record of 97,955 units sold in the third quarter of 2010.

"Kia's design-led transformation has delivered a diverse lineup of stylish and fun-to-drive vehicles, and with rising fuel prices, more and more consumers are visiting our showrooms to take advantage of the outstanding fuel economy each of our vehicles offer," said Byung Mo Ahn, group president and CEO of KMA and Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia (KMMG). "Led by the Sorento and Soul, our record results are a reflection of the tremendous impact our fuel-efficient and technology-laden vehicles have made with consumers, and new levels of performance in models like the turbocharged Optima and Sportage will continue to surprise and impress consumers who turn to Kia while shopping for a new vehicle."

The record sales performance illustrates the growing awareness and consideration of the Kia brand resulting from the company's global commitment to quality, safety, design, technology and overall value. In March, the all-new 2011 Optima became the first Korean-built vehicle to be awarded a five-star crash safety rating under NHTSA's new, stricter guidelines and the 2011 Sportage CUV was named the "Best New Crossover Vehicle" in the 2011 Readers' Choice Awards by About.com.

Apart from the Chevrolet HHR's departure and the Ford Fiesta's inclusion, the list of America's best-selling cars is full of the exact same models in March as it was in February. Ah, but the order has changed, evidenced by the status arrows in the third column.

20% of America's 20 most popular cars posted lower sales in March 2011 than in March 2010, the 2011 Toyota Camry being the most famous of the bunch. Ford Focus sales are falling, true, but expect a big boost in coming months as the now-in-production 2012 Ford Focus arrives at dealerships. Worse than the Chevrolet Malibu's 12.4% year-over-year drop is the Malibu's 18.5% decline from February in a market which grew by more than 26%.

80% of America's 10 best-selling cars weren't American cars, though their status as American-built cars is often secure. The Ford Fusion was America's best-selling American in March... but the Fusion is manufactured in Mexico. The Honda Accord, Nissan Altima, and Toyota Camry are made in America, y'all.

All the numbers on America's 20 favourite cars are below.

It's alive and well. The current Yaris is in its final months (5th year in US, 6th year in most other areas). Dealers have also skimped on inventory for quite a while now preferring to sell Corollas.

Even in its 6th year in Japan, the liftback remains the 3rd best selling vehicle in Japan after the Prius and Fit.

With the all new 2012's rolling out soon in combination with expected $4++/gal gas, the Yaris should receive a big bump in sales.

I am very impressed with Infiniti G sedan's sales number, 5,119 units sold. Was it because of G25? I have heard that the 2.5L is much smoother and quieter than the 3.7L. I wish Nissan would release the sales of each version instead of the combined number.

March Deliveries

DETROIT – March capped a successful quarter for General Motors in the United States. Retail sales surged 38 percent for its four brands, driven by demand for Chevrolet’s all-new Cruze compact sedan. In spite of a decline in incentives, dealers reported 206,621 total sales during March, an increase of 11 percent. This total included a 17 percent increase in retail sales, compared to March 2010.

March’s retail sales increase was spurred by a 34-percent rise in passenger car retail sales, led by a 287 percent gain in retail sales of the Cruze over the car it replaced.

March deliveries to fleets declined 1 percent and represented 27 percent of the company’s total sales – the ninth straight month that fleet sales comprised less than 30 percent of total sales.

For the first three months, total sales increased 26 percent to 592,545 units compared to a year earlier. As a result, each of GM’s brands – Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac – gained retail and total market share during the quarter.

“Our plan was to get out of the gates quickly in the first quarter and we succeeded,” said Don Johnson, vice president, U.S. Sales Operations. “Consumers responded favorably to the value of our broad lineup of fuel-efficient cars, trucks and crossovers.”

In the first quarter, fleet sales represented 24 percent of the company’s total sales volume, compared to 30 percent in the first quarter of 2010.

GM’s Newest Vehicles Continue to Drive Retail Gains – up 54 Percent in March

Combined retail sales for vehicles launched since June 2009 – Chevrolet Equinox, Silverado HD, Cruze and Volt; Buick LaCrosse and Regal; GMC Sierra HD and Terrain; and Cadillac SRX, CTS Wagon and CTS Coupe – increased 54 percent during March and were up 74 percent for the first three months of the year.

“March sales demonstrated our newest models continue to win over customers,” Johnson said. “Vehicles like the Chevrolet Cruze and Equinox put us in great position to benefit from consumer’s increasing desire for fuel-efficient vehicles.”

Passenger Cars

Total sales of GM passenger cars improved 15 percent during March, led by the sale of 18,018 Cruzes. Retail sales of GM passenger cars rose 34 percent for the month. The Cruze, Chevrolet Camaro Convertible and Buick Regal all have achieved record retail sales since being launched. For the quarter, retail sales of GM’s passenger cars were up 49 percent, also led by the Cruze, up 203 percent.

Crossovers

The Chevrolet, GMC and Cadillac brands each set March total and retail sales records for crossover sales during the month, driven by a 20 percent increase in combined retail sales by the Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain. The two also set March records for retail sales. For the quarter, retail sales of GM’s complete lineup of industry-leading crossovers were up 30 percent.

Pickups

Total combined sales of Chevrolet Silverado and Avalanche, and GMC Sierra increased 11 percent in March, with retail sales also rising 11 percent versus a year ago. For the quarter, retail sales for GM’s full-size pickups rose 38 percent, while total sales improved to 130,866 units – a 31-percent increase.

Incentives

During March, purchase incentives declined on a per unit basis.

“We’ve said all along that our plan for the year was to be at or near industry average on incentives as a percent of average transaction prices, as we were last year,” Johnson said. “Our actions in March were consistent with that plan and we will continue to be prudent in our go-to-market approach.”

Month-end dealer inventory in the United States stood at about 574,000 units, which is about 57,000 higher compared to February and about 149,000 higher than March 2010.

Volkswagen Announces Strongest Sales Month in Seven Years

Company also reports record-breaking sales month for all-new Jetta

HERNDON, Va. (April 1, 2011) — Volkswagen of America, Inc. today reported 27,176 units sold in March 2011, a 22.7 percent increase over prior year sales. The company also announced 16,969 Jetta models sold – more than any other month in company history.

“We have truly launched into 2011 with strong momentum. Not only did we enjoy the best Jetta sales month in company history, Volkswagen experienced the best overall sales month since 2004,“ said Mark Barnes, Chief Operating Officer, Volkswagen of America, Inc.

The company sold 67,039 vehicles in the first quarter, a 15 percent increase over 2010. Lead by clean diesel TDI technology, Volkswagen Golf sales increased 29% over prior year. CC and Tiguan models also experienced strong gains of 16.9 and 12.5 percent, respectively.

“Volkswagen is well positioned to continue this growth with the introduction of the all-new U.S.-built Passat and a new 21st Century Beetle later this year,” said Barnes.

I'm also impressed with Nissan overall. Is this the first time they have 3 cars in the top 20? And is this the first time the Altima beat the Camry?

With the all new 2012's rolling out soon in combination with expected $4++/gal gas, the Yaris should receive a big bump in sales.
Next gen Yaris is already on sale in Japan :-).
