I remember that period (of high gas prices) in 2008 well. Around the SF/Oakland/SJ Bay Area, changes in traffic density were insignificant, people really had no choice for practical alternative transportation to/from major job centers and resulting economic hardship of the higher prices was minimal.

But the recreational or elective long distance travel between major urban areas was significantly reduced in CA and other western states (between SJ/LA/Sacramento/Lake Tahoe/Vegas, as examples). The reduction I just mentioned was visible and obvious to a casual observer. I'm looking forward to possible impact on the open road this summer, I'm thinking about a road trip mid-summer.
