Nissan must be trying a new strategy with the 2 versions. Maybe they want to capture the sub 11K customer with the sedan (thus the budget interior) and get the above 14K (current Versa hatch starts at 14K) with the hatch. I can't quite understand what I'm seeing with the hatch being so different from the sedan, both inside and out.

Kind of a stretch since the old LS had a pretty generic front end.

SpeedFlex I think the current Versa now sells in droves b/c of the cheaper near stripper model. I personally think its a fantastic strategy, to give people a new car for around 10-11 grand a market so many brands have left.

I do see LS 430 influence with the grill and Skyline sedan influence in the lower bumper.

Well, the current Yaris hatch and sedan share nothing but mechanicals and a few interior components. Not a single exterior panel is shared between the two. Outside of the US, the Yaris is sold under 2 different names. The same is true with the Versa. That's why the difference. Companies feel the need to combine models under one name for our market.

This.

I was just gonna bring up the Yaris vs. Vitz/Belta comparison. Thanks for saving me some typing.

Default Official: 2012 Nissan Versa priced from $10,990

Official: 2012 Nissan Versa priced from $10,990

The 2012 model year marks the end of the sub-$10,000 new car here in the United States, but Nissan is still committed to offering a bargain price for shoppers looking for purely basic transportation. The 2012 Versa subcompact has officially been priced, and the base 1.6 S 5MT model will only set you back a cool $10,990. And unlike the sub-$10K Versa that came before it, the new 2012 model comes standard with both air conditioning and an AM/FM/CD/AUX stereo.

Of course, more lavishly appointed Versa models are available, starting with the 1.6 S CVT at $12,760, the 1.6 SV CVT at $14,560 and the 1.8 SL CVT at $15,560. Nissan offers a host of optional equipment throughout the Versa range, including Bluetooth, XM satellite radio, a touch-screen navigation system and USB input for iPod/MP3 devices.

Looks like a POS flying turd. There absolutely no reason why Nissan could have avoided the cartoon-Dopey look. Just because a car is small, it can still be made nice. Total fail and a waste of resources here.
