Ford Mustang Boss 302R captures first Grand-Am victory

Ford has been quite successful in Grand-Am's Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge, most recently winning the championship in 2009 with the FR500C Mustang. Last year, Ford Racing introduced the Mustang Boss 302R into the series, but as with any new race car, it had various kinks and bugs to work through. The Boss 302R ended the 2010 race season without a victory, and the championship went to the BMW M3.

Things are looking up once again for the Mustang, however, with the Mustang Boss 302R taking its first victory this past weekend at Barber Motorsports park. Multimatic Motorsports drivers Scott Maxwell and Joe Foster brought home the win, while the Roush Boss 302R of Jack Roush Jr. finished in third place. The Multimatic Motorsports team is currently five points behind Turner Motorsports and its BMW M3.

An iconic Mustang is back in victory lane delivering a race win to the "Blue Oval." Multimatic Motorsports' championship driver duo of Scott Maxwell and Joe Foster claimed the first competition victory for the Boss 302R in the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge in GRAND-AM at Barber Motorsports Park in Alabama.

"This is a pretty special victory," said Scott Maxwell, who was involved in the testing and development of the Boss 302R. "We have come close a few times before so maybe we were overdue, but it hasn't really sunk in yet. Certainly there is a special legacy in racing the Boss 302R and the amazing job that Parnelli Jones did winning the championship in the Boss. It has been an honor to run the same paint scheme as Parnelli and this is an amazing win."

The Boss 302R is the latest turnkey ready to race, road racing offering from Ford Racing Performance Parts. The lessons learned in the development on the 302R were applied to the street version of the Mustang Boss 302.

"What a great weekend for Mustang," said Jamie Allison, Director Ford North America Motorsports. "I am down here in Texas and Mustang wins its first NASCAR race and then here we are on Saturday mid-day and Boss 302R claims its first victory since its return. It is just outstanding. What a weekend for Mustang. Ford fans and Mustang fans everywhere are having a blast. I am especially proud of the hard work of the team, whether it is Mutlimatic or the Roush team down in GRAND-AM. Congratulations to Scott Maxwell and Joe Foster for this accomplishment and to Jack Roush Jr. and Billy Johnson who are sitting on the podium in third place as well. It is a labor of love and a lot of effort over the last two years since the Boss has been back on the track. To see the Boss 302R get its first victory in GRAND-AM this weekend is just great."

"The Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge is incredibly competitive," said Maxwell. "I know our Boss 302R is running great and Roush has a very strong Boss as well. No win is easy, but I hope we can run a few off in a row and then start racing for the championship not just race wins."

The GRAND-AM Continental Sports Car Challenge will return to action at Virginia International Raceway, May 13-14.
