Default u.s. and metric fuel economy conversion

don't know about anyone else, but i've been a bit frustrated seeing mpg and metric (liters/100km) measurements and not being able to convert between them easily. so here's a cheat sheet:

metric to u.s.:
take metric fuel economy (liters/100km) number and divide 235.2 by that number.

e.g., 2.8l/100km is 235.2/2.8 mpg or 84mpg.

u.s. to metric:
take mpg and divide by 235.2 by that number.

e.g., 84mpg is 235.2/84 or 2.8l/100km

imperial (euro) gallon is 1.2 u.s. gallons.

so 235.2 factor becomes 282.2

That is waaaay to complicated Paul.

Buy a Blackberry or iPhone and it will do the calculations for you.

Plus, every country has their own testing cycles. European and Japanese cycles are much more optimistic than current EPA figures.

So an accurate conversion is nearly impossible. All we can get is rough estimates.

^^ thanks for p1ssing in my popcorn.

i just wanted to be able to comprehend the inverse relationship euro standard (lower number, higher mpg).

When converting from Euro cycle fuel economy to US EPA mileage just divide that MPG number by 1.3 and you will get close approximate to US EPA testing.

1km = 0.62 miles
1l = 0.264 US gallons

100km/2.8l * 1l/0.264 US gallons * 0.62 miles/1km = 83.87miles/ US gallon

taking the 1l/0.264 US gallons * 0.62miles/1km, conversion factor is 2.35.

Invert the 2.8l/100km like i did to 100km/2.8l and multiply by this conversion factor of 2.35. Done

Summary, invert european mileage standard, multiply by 2.35, you have US miles per gallon.

This is why high school math is useful =)

EDIT: this does not consider how Europeans and Americans or any other country does their testing cycles. Just straight raw number conversion.

**not fact, just an example**

Say Europeans do their testing with 100% highway driving and achieve 3.0l/100km. Americans do the test differently, 50% city, 50% highway, A/C usage, etc and achieve 4.7l/100km. You get the picture.

Same thing, not really, you didn't show how you came up to that conversion factor. Arrived at the same conclusion, yes.

we're not in high school anymore.....showing work for basic arithmetic isn't all that necessary--especially when these are all internationally recognized conversion values.

Well. Not all of us are in high school--I know there's some youngsters around occasionally.

You'd be surprised about how often and how many college students can't even get unit conversions right. So I'm sorry if I went ahead and showed the math just in case someone was interested. I'll just keep the work to myself next time stuff like this comes around.
