The 3.5L V6 in Europe actually had around 288hp compared to the 268hp here in the US. I'll try to find the article, but right around when the new E was introduced they compared two euro spec cars a MBZ E and a BMW 535i. The E350 was marginally better than the US spec one

seems as if most v6s are gettin into the 300hp range.. without the turbos and superchargers. for 3.5 v6s, i wish for the is350 to lead the pack for 4 door sedans but since mercedes is makin a move for power increases, hopefully the IS lines steps it up as well!

Where the new MB V6 shines is in the emissions and fuel economy department. These aspects will be far more important in the future than bragging rights. And, because it is of a modular design, adding forced induction to it later on shouldn't be difficult if more power is required due to competitive reasons.
Horsepower isn't everything. Weight balance, transmission gearing and response, the tires and many other factors affect performance. Besides, you have to be borderline insane to use an E350 or most other cars in this class as performance sedans. The only real sport sedans here are from BMW and Infiniti. Everything else is luxury-biased. Most people in this market prefer a comfortable luxury sedan with ample power - and even the 268-horsepower E350 excelled at this.

What is a real sport sedan? B/C a purist will say its a car that offers a MANUAL, something only BMW offers multiple sedans. Lexus has it only in the IS 250, Infinit only the G37. The IS F wipes the floor with ANY Infiniti.
It is just a giant double-standard that now since Benz still has an engine below the leaders in regards to the V-6 that you are saying "oh Luxury and MPG is what matters". Seems its okay for Benz to offer that but not Lexus.

I get it. HP is everything when its the Germans leading. When its Lexus leading, HP doesn't matter MPG does. When Lexus leads with MPG, that doesn't matter but HP does.

obviously, unless Lexus has everything better by 2x, then it is failing below and cant compete... but when Lexus has 6 year old engine that performs better than brand new MB engine with their latest tech, then I bet engine doesnt matter at all anymore, it is all about... dual screen navigation!!!!

I've noted many times (and C&D mentioned it in a comparo) that the GS 350 in a comparison with all the mid-size sedans was the fastest automatic tested then averaged the highest MPG (only the manual 535 was faster). As stated this is now an older V-6 and the tranny has 6 speeds compared to 7/8 today.
That is TECHNOLOGY. Fastest and the most MPG. Sadly Lexus has done NOTHING to advertise this.
